Moeser Vows to Clean Up Chemical Dump

After a public outcry last month from some local residents, Chancellor James Moeser has agreed to clean up a chemical dump site near the Horace Williams tract when Carolina North development begins. But some citizens and neighbors of the tract complain this is still unacceptable. Earlier this month, Bob Epting, an environmental lawyer in the area, handed a petition to the Chapel Hill Town Council requesting the chemical dump on the edge of the tract be cleaned up now, not later.

Shearon Harris Waste Could Move

The good news is that future high-level nuclear waste will be leaving the state of North Carolina and headed for Nevada's Yucca Mountain. But some residents say the bad news is that the waste will be shipped out on trucks and trains that will pass within a mile of more than 300,000 North Carolina residents and more than 300 of the state's schools. However, the members of the U.S. Senate who recently approved the bill believe moving the waste to a central location makes more sense than allowing it to build up at plants all over the county.

Drought Could Cause Water Restrictions

The Orange Water and Sewer Authority Board of Directors is scheduled to meet today to consider a resolution that will put residents in the area under mandatory water restrictions. On June 27, OWASA adopted a resolution requesting voluntary water conservation, but since then the available supply has continued to decline.

Residents Ask for Cleanup

Local residents have been asking UNC to clean up its mess for a long time, and now they have started to put pressure on the University to take responsibility. Last week Bob Epting and Julie McClintock handed a petition to the Chapel Hill Town Council requesting that the chemical dump on the edge of the Horace Williams tract be cleaned up.

Former Employee Sues Carrboro Over Firing

While Carrboro Town Manager Robert Morgan tries to sort out problems with the town's budget revisions, he might have another problem to resolve. Keith Lankford, former zoning administrator for the town of Carrboro, recently filed a lawsuit against the town arguing that he was fired because of unpopular decisions he made while employed by the town. Lankford, who began working for the town in 1991, was terminated June 1, 1999.
