New wings eatery to launch next week

Come Monday, Chapel Hill residents will have another option when they crave buffalo wings. Ba-Da Wings, which already has a location in Athens, Ga., the home of the University of Georgia, will open in the former location of the Inside Scoop on Airport Road. Joshua Greene, who owns the Chapel Hill location, said the owners decided on opening a restaurant in Chapel Hill because Ba-Da Wings caters to the college demographic. "I think we offer a good alternative to a lot of the food that's out there on college campuses," he said.

Local businesses weigh in on arrival of Ralph Lauren to Franklin Street

With last week's announcement that there will soon be a Polo Ralph Lauren Rugby store opening on Franklin Street, local business officials are speculating on what that will mean for area business. Virginia Knapp, associate director of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, said she's pleased by the news. "I think it's going to be an exciting addition to downtown and very complementary to the stores that are already there," Knapp said.

4 candidates to square off in county race

While almost every man, woman and child in Orange County is well aware of the upcoming presidential and senatorial elections, some might have forgotten that 2004 is also an important year for the Orange County Board of Commissioners. Come Tuesday, voters will be charged with picking a pair of candidates to fill the two open seats on the board, which is in charge of countywide services.

Opening brings new start for APS

Saturday will mark the opening of the Animal Protection Society's brand-new adoption center, almost six months after the group lost control of the Orange County Animal Shelter. The opening, which will include tours of the facility and a demonstration of the group's dog training program, comes as a new beginning for APS. For more than a year, the organization was embroiled in controversy concerning its management of the county's animal shelter.

Board delays its vote on public forum policy

After heated debate, Orange County School Board members decided Monday to postpone voting on a motion that would allow a limited public forum in county schools. Initially, the board voted in favor of allowing a limited public forum in Orange County Schools, which would allow certain nonprofit organizations to distribute materials to students. But then a motion to reconsider was made by board member Delores Simpson. Motions to reconsider must be made by a board member who voted on the prevailing side. Simpson had the tie-breaking vote the first time around.

Officials, schools talk collaboration

The Orange County Board of Commissioners and members of the two local school boards put their heads together Monday night, continuing discussions on ways to bridge the financial gap between city and county schools. County leaders, along with representatives from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County school systems, continued work on a plan, initially proposed by the commissioners, that would hire the Robert Segal accounting firm to conduct a study on the issue.
