Spanky's will close March 31.

Spanky’s Bar and Grill, a Franklin Street staple, will close Saturday after more than 40 years of business.

In a Facebook post, the restaurant said they were saddened by the news, but announced plans to open a new restaurant in the same location next month. Spanky’s is owned by the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group.

“Our customers will still see the familiar faces and welcoming atmosphere they have known for many years,” said the Facebook post. “We intend to uphold the same standards of great food and service that Spanky’s has always been known for.”

Located at the corner of Franklin and Columbia streets, the restaurant was well known for its game-day atmosphere, casual dining and caricatures of UNC legends hanging on the walls.

“We are eternally grateful to the town of Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina, and our countless regulars and customers for their loyal support of Spanky’s throughout the years,” Spanky’s said.
