What's the weirdest field trip experience you had in public school?

A UNC professor recently took his computer science class on an impromptu trip to TOPO. My experiences in school trips had fewer bar tabs and a lot more permission slips, but I feel inspired to share a timeline of my field trip history. It goes as follows.

2003: My class goes to Old Salem to learn about (white) colonial life. My team wins the cornbread-making contest, per the judgment of someone pretending to be "the pastor's wife."

2005: Preparing to graduate elementary school, we go on the yearly trip to a lake. I stay home sick because I'm still in my fat stage and vehemently refuse to swim in public.

2006: We stop for lunch on the way to a field trip so dull it has literally been overshadowed in my memory by a mall food court. Students decide to toss pennies over the glass railing on the second floor to watch them fall. Things escalate; someone throws a box of chicken nuggets. My class has field trip privileges revoked. My next trip is senior year of high school.

QUICK HITS

  • Chapel Hill recently received a $900,000 grant dedicated to Orange County having the state's first dementia-friendly community initiative.
  • UNC recently introduced the Master of Arts in educational innovation, technology and entrepreneurship, which is the first of its kind in the country.
  • UNC volleyball killed it in its last home match of the regular season, marking a 10th consecutive win for the team.

IN CAMPUS UPDATES

Chancellor Carol Folt is hosting a town hall meeting on race and inclusivity tonight. In other updates, a plaque to contextualize Carolina Hall is set to be placed on Nov. 23. And officials say that over the summer, UNC will install an exhibit in Carolina Hall to share the history of the building's name and the recent movement to change it.

IN TOWN NEWS

La Residence could have its alcohol permit suspended for 50 days starting Dec. 18, according to a newly proposed compromise. And if it pays a $5,000 fine, the restaurant can shorten its penalty. ABC Commission officials said that at the meeting where the case was decided, 67 percent of the 122 cases they heard that day involved underage drinking.

IN 'COOL MOMS'

A computer science professor footed a $500 tab for his students at TOPO. It wasn't anything creepy, like your high school's AP Euro teacher with a leering problem or men from Kesha songs. Professor Ketan Mayer-Patel took them to TOPO because his classroom projector wasn't working. Normal stuff.

IN MOOD ALTERERS

If you're trying to get lit, kava isn't for you. The drink's effects vary from person to person, but it often comes with a little euphoria followed by slight tiredness and nausea. It's not unlike your first underwhelming frat party.

IN PODCASTS

If you're a short man or like gossip involving the UNC academic-athletic scandal, listen to this podcast. Kelsey, one of my many better halves, will tell you everything (some things) you need to know about UNC's Sportsgate of 2014. Or at least, like, the funniest emails provided in the Wainstein report.
