DTH at a Glance: The Olympics are X-men family reunions

I will never understand how Olympic athletes can possibly be made of the same flesh and blood as I am.

There is no way Usain Bolt does not secretly have super speed. And how the heck does Simone Biles do a backflip on that little balance beam and still land perfectly calmly, as if nothing wild just happened?

I wonder the same thing about UNC students sometimes. With all the things we juggle — school, jobs, clubs, volunteering — I’m surprised we haven’t all thrown ourselves into vats of toxic waste in an attempt to grow six extra super-powered arms.

Sometimes, super humans perform fantastic Olympic feats. Sometimes, super humans have computer science and applied math majors. And sometimes, they do both — for example, UNC student Jake Sellinger, who was diagnosed with arthritis two years ago and now practices Olympic weightlifting at UNC.

QUICK HITS

  • Sophomore Nick Bafia not only demonstrated awesome school spirit by participating in the Week of Welcome hashtag challenge, but also snagged a grand prize and a selfie with Carol Folt. #blessup
  • ITS is the real superhero this week. They’re doing everything they can to defeat hackers using phishing emails to try to access UNC student email accounts and personal information.
  • The passage of the Connect NC bond, which will give more than $1 billion to higher education, will allow UNC to create a new building for the School of Medicine.
  • The North Carolina legislature will provide funding for the North Carolina Policy Collaboratory to work on environmental policy issues.

IN META SELF-PROMOTIONS

What do you want to know behind the scenes of UNC football? Our sports reporters are answering questions in a live podcast recording previewing the 2016 season this Thursday. Donate $25 by 4 p.m. on Thursday to support our A+ coverage and get to hear the preview before it's published.

IN THE STATE OF THE (STUDENT) UNION

UNC may be in the process of creating a new union designed by the students and for the students. After studies on student satisfaction with the current union are completed, the student body will be given the opportunity to decide what changes will be made, if any at all.

IN RESIGNATIONS

The executive director of the Inter-Faith Council resigned recently due to a family member’s health issues. Now the nonprofit, which addresses homelessness, hunger and economic inequality in Orange County, is making an effort to move forward with projects despite the sudden change.

IN STAYING STRONG

Jake Sellinger’s lifelong dream of joining the United States Naval Academy was cut short after just one year. After being diagnosed with arthritis, Sellinger was honorably discharged from the academy. Now, two years later, he is the president of the Tar Heel Weight Lifting Club.

IN FIRE AND FLAMES

Chapel Hill’s new fire chief is a man with a plan. We sat down to talk to recently appointed Matt Sullivan about his responsibilities, life outside the station, and high expectations for his fellow firemen.
