Tar Heel Tech: iPhone 4S review

Using ingredients like Heart of Jobs and Ive of Newt, the wizards in Cupertino have crafted another smartphone. With the iPhone 4S being the last Apple product without a new cook in the kitchen, is the phone worth the upgrade?

Former Apple CEO and visionary Steve Jobs passes away at 56

Steve Jobs, the man who founded Apple and invented the iPod, iPhone, iPad and Macintosh, passed away at 56, according to the Apple website. Jobs had been fighting cancer since 2004, taking three leaves of absences from Apple in a seven year span. Jobs officially stepped down on Aug. 24. During his time at Apple, Jobs turned electronics into design, making computers that were thought to be nerdy into something mainstream. Jobs was also responsible for the return of Apple as a company after many critics declared it dead in 1995.

Tar Heel Tech: iPhone 4S announced, packs "humble personal assistant" feature

Have you ever wanted to feel like Dexter, boy genius? When I was little, I wanted his life. I wanted to have a secret laboratory, his immense knowledge and a computer assistant. As a kid, I had only one of the things that Dexter had: an annoying sister. Now, with Apple’s Tuesday announcement of the iPhone 4S, I can have two. Such as the 3GS succeeded the 3G, the iPhone 4S keeps the same form factor as its predecessor while improving its internal hardware. The big selling point of the iPhone 4S will not be these upgrades, however, it will lie in it’s voice recognition software called Siri. Billed as a “humble personal assistant,” Siri allows you to give voice commands to your iPhone. For example, if you tell it to “Send Michael a text message saying ‘I’ll be there at 8’”, the phone will compose a text to Michael saying what you told it to write. It also has Wolfram|Alpha integration, meaning you can ask it a question (“How many days until Christmas?” “What is the weather in Mexico City, Mexico?” “What is the meaning of life?”) and Siri will give you the answers (82, 73 degrees and partly cloudy, and 42 (go figure)). Seeing it in action is quite impressive.

Tar Heel Tech: Kindle Fire poised to set tablet market ablaze

Amazon.com announced on Wednesday a new line of Kindles, including a tablet device called the Kindle Fire. The name, which instantly reminded me of Billy Joel’s classic We didn’t Start the Fire, is appropriate since the Fire has an uphill battle against Apple in the tablet market. Despite Apple’s pseudo-monopoly, I think Amazon.com can pull it off. Even if they don’t beat Apple, they’ll still claim a huge share in the tablet market. Here’s why: This is not your father’s Kindle. Unlike the other reading-focused Kindles, the Fire’s components allow it to play music, apps and movies. Gone are the physical keyboard and e-ink display that are found on the other Kindle products. Instead, you get a seven-inch IPS color touchscreen that looks vibrant and crisp.

Tar Heel Tech: OmmWriter

If you’ve ever typed a long paper, you know how difficult it is to focus on writing. Not only are you distracted by other windows (I’m guilty of always having my Twitter up), but you become distracted by Microsoft Word’s interface.
