Driving over 500 miles with friends from North Carolina State University and UNC-Chapel Hill, junior Ashley Gill embarked on a journey last Friday to Afropunk Brooklyn, a global Black arts and music festival garnering over 60,000 attendees annually.

There are about 2.3 million people incarcerated in the United States today, more than any other country in total, or per capita. There are multiple factors that have led to this mass incarceration, but a significant one is the way that the criminal justice system is stacked against the poor: a striking example is the legal institution of cash bail bonds. A cash bail bond requires defendants to provide an immediate payment to the court, to be returned when the court’s requirements are met.

On the heels of Carolina’s trouncing of Duke on Sunday, it’s valid to wonder about the legacy of the World Cup this summer. For one, five players of the championship team are Tar Heels, and recently-retired Heather O’Reilly makes a cool six recent Carolina superstars on the U.S. side and another two for other teams. While working with Reuters this summer, I covered the entirety of the World Cup, following the U.S. squad across France interviewing the players, the coach and FIFA officials. Here are five things I learned:

I’m so grateful to be the opinion editor this year, and I’m really excited to see how my writers and I will work to improve this desk. In years past, I’ve felt like the opinion desk hasn’t truly represented the opinions, perspectives and narratives of all of our readers. That said, my three major goals for this year are to increase community engagement, to sharpen the opinions we publish and to diversify our writing staff.

Never will I understand the cognitive dissonance in those who tell minorities critical of America to “go back to where they came from” while actively supporting a president who campaigns on the idea that their beloved country is heading toward a state of despair and doom — a state that only a borderline-autocratic ruler can repair (Make America Great Again, anyone?).

When Dean Smith left his post at North Carolina in 1997, he retired as perhaps the greatest coach in college basketball history. With 11 Final Fours, a pair of national championships and 879 wins, then an NCAA Division I record, Smith etched his name on the Mount Rushmore of college basketball minds.

I’d dreamed about college since I can remember. In middle school I made lists of schools I could see myself going to and spent hours on college websites scrolling through major choices. I remember my first college tour like it was yesterday.
