Another biopsy to be performed

A biopsy revealed that men’s basketball coach Roy Williams is cancer free.

The biopsy of the tumor removed from North Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams’ right kidney revealed that the tumor was not cancerous.

The tumor is an oncocytoma, which does not spread.

Williams, 62, also has a tumor in his left kidney, but doctors suspect that it might be the same type that was already removed.

“We are pleased with how well Coach Williams is doing. If everything continues to progress as expected, he should be back to his normal activities soon,” said Dr. Eric Wallen, in a release. He is a professor of urology at UNC and led the surgical team.

A biopsy will be performed on the other kidney later this week. If it’s determined that the tumor is also benign, then a second surgery will not be necessary.

Late Night with Roy is scheduled for October 12, and it is not yet known how much time Williams will miss.

“There is still work to be done,” Williams said in a release, “but we will continue to deal with that over the next few weeks and get through it with the help of first-rate medical care and the continued support of my family and our extended family and friends through Carolina Basketball.”
