UNC men's basketball holds off Clemson for first ACC win

In its 150th ever meeting against Clemson, the No. 7 North Carolina men's basketball team was able to continue its series dominance over the Tigers, earning a 80-69 win in its first ACC contest of the season.

Clemson (7-6, 0-1 ACC) was able to jump out to an early 6-0 lead, but that would be the largest deficit the Tar Heels (12-2, 1-0 ACC) would face the entire night.

After a poor defensive showing against UNC-Greensboro, UNC ramped up the pressure from the beginning of Wednesday's contest.

In the first half, Clemson committed eight turnovers, shot 37 percent from the field and hit just 3-of-11 3-pointers.

Senior forward Brice Johnson, who came into the game averaging 22.5 points and 11 rebounds per game in his last four contests, was held to just one point and two rebounds in the first half.

With Johnson rendered ineffective, Joel Berry stepped in to pick up the slack. In the first half, the sophomore guard contributed 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Tar Heels led by as many as 10 in the first half, but allowed Clemson to hang around in the waning moments of the period.

After UNC missed a shot with less than two seconds left, Johnson picked up a foul which sent the Tigers to the free throw line, where they were able to cut the score to 37-30.

North Carolina quickly pushed its lead back to double digits as the second half opened, a trend that held for a good part of the rest of the contest.

The Tigers did not lay down quietly however. After falling down by 16 with just under nine minutes to play, Clemson went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to six.

With the Tigers poised on making a comeback, UNC turned to its bench players, who helped keep the game out of reach.

Junior Isaiah Hicks and sophomore Theo Pinson led the way for the Tar Heels down the stretch, providing an offensive spark off of the bench that caught Clemson off guard.

The two combined for 27 points and 12 rebounds on the night, several of which came in key stretches late in the game.

With the win, North Carolina pushed its series lead to an astounding 130-20. Clemson's last victory over UNC was on January 13, 2010.

Quotable

"Offensively we have so many guys that can go off at any time ... so I think that just shows how deep we are. Brice didn't play very well today, but everybody else stepped up and we were able to come up with a win." — Sophomore wing Justin Jackson on UNC's offensive performance.

Notable

With 1:17 left in the game, senior guard Marcus Paige caught a pass from Hicks on the fast break and dunked the ball, giving UNC a 13 point lead. According to UNC athletics, this was Paige's first dunk of the season, and just the third of his career.

Three numbers that matter

58: With the win, North Carolina is now 58-0 all-time at home against Clemson.

11: After a 16 point showing against the Tigers, Berry has now scored in double figures in 11-of-14 games this season. He scored in double figures just once in 2014-15.
