Honestly forgot I was homeschooled for a year until this morning

We live in a state in which homeschool students have outnumbered private schoolers for two years now. With that in mind, I think it's time we start getting used to homeschoolers. Especially because I was once a homeschooler. So it's my obligation to shatter your stereotypes.

Homeschool students don't just look like that weird transfer guy who ate glue sticks in the sixth grade. Some of us turn out like, super attractive and well adjusted. And the people that doesn't happen to get employed to write newsletters for student publications in Chapel Hill. We're a mixed bag.

QUICK HITS

  • Chapel Hill started Orange County's first-ever NAACP Youth Council to introduce young people to social and political issues.
  • A new Student Government initiative aims to throw a lifeline to people who are struggling with stress, finances and other trials that come with being a UNC student.
  • Everyone who goes to Campus Health is screened for depression in an attempt to de-stigmatize mental health and connect students with Counseling and Psychological Services.
  • Stuart Scott, a UNC graduate and ESPN broadcaster, was inducted into the N.C. Journalism Hall of Fame on Friday. He passed away from cancer in January.

IN FRIED NEWS

The N.C. State Fair might have reached one million attendees this year. Its success can be largely attributed to deep-fried foods, which the state of North Carolina unanimously loves. Except Steve Smith of Smitty's Apples — who described this new-age fair food as full of "vitamin grease." You spill that truth tea, Steve Smith of Smitty's Apples.

IN LEARNIN' TODAY

N.C. homeschoolers outnumber private school students, but you wouldn't know it from looking at our student body. We only get about 100 homeschool applicants per year, but we take more than 40 percent of them. So 10/10 would recommend it to any high school seniors who don't mind a glue-stick reputation.

IN LITERALLY 2015

Pro-Confederate protestors and their counter-protestors took over McCorkle Place yesterday. Student activists clashed with the group "Alamance County Taking Back Alamance County." And regardless of which side you agree with, you have to admit it's impressive they've already taken back Alamance and are moving on to working on Orange.

IN THE BLOGS

We delve into a brief exposé of sampling and song-stealing in the music world. The trend is more than just a petty beef between Drake and a musician you've never heard of — it's the unshakable bedrock of The Black Eyed Peas' career. So don't take it lightly.

Speaking of hot Canadians, read about the guy who just became the new prime minister. If you're into national and international news, I highly recommend this weekly roundup that's probably too important for them to trust me to write.
