Someone made gay beer, and I am too hype for it

On Friday afternoon, a UNC graduate popped the question to his longtime girlfriend in the Pit — complete with a live a cappella group serenading them with a romantic song, photographers taking their pictures and bitter single people watching from the sidelines. With everything anyone could ever want, she naturally said yes.

This situation, once you strip away all romantic aspects of it and change the people and location involved, is remarkably similar to how it went when I asked my first boyfriend to senior prom — which is more or less the same as a wedding proposal. I planned a date at the lake, paddled out to one of the islands in the middle of it with my friend, spelled out "PROM?" in logs on the beach, and set up a picnic basket. (For the record, by "picnic basket" I mean a basket filled with food I ordered from a Taco Bell.)

My friend left, and my boyfriend at the time and I went canoeing out toward the island. Granted, by the time we got back out there, some straight dudes had thrown all the logs in the water and took some of the quesadillas, but he still said yes. And more importantly, I still have a story I can humble brag about when people tell me I'm not romantic.

QUICK HITS

  • Bruce Springsteen pulled out of his concert in Greensboro on Sunday night in light of House Bill 2. The almost 15,000 expected attendees were offered refunds for their tickets.
  • Virginia Tech dealt UNC baseball a 4-3 loss in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon.
  • Local libraries announced that patrons will be able to check out Wi-Fi hotspots for three weeks at a time. The promise land of universal Wi-Fi is getting closer and closer.
  • The town of Carrboro shut down Weaver Street yesterday afternoon to bring in a rock wall, bike blender and Zumba class for its annual Open Streets community event. There were lots of dogs in attendance.

IN STATE NEWS

Plans are underway for a statue commemorating African Americans outside the state capitol. Gov. Pat McCrory just announced four public hearings across the state regarding the project. No word on why you need four public hearings to build a statue.

IN FEELING SINGLE AF

The Loreleis' rendition of “Like I’m Gonna Lose You" helped a marriage proposal in the Pit on Friday. Shinese Purnell and Derrick Bennett, both UNC graduates, have officially started the next chapter of their lives together. Even if Derrick did apparently tell her he'd never date her in high school.

IN SUPPORTIVE ALCOHOL

Two local brewers are making queer beer in opposition to House Bill 2. Keil Jansen and Erik Myers are partnering with 30 other brewers across the state to create a beer called "Don’t Be Mean to People: A Golden Rule." Proceeds will go to a queer summer camp and other LGBT organizations.
