DTH at a Glance: If you see this, thanks for the Red Bull

Good morning, and happy National Spouse's Day!

Thanks to ~spouses~ Leena and Sheldon Peck, the Ackland Art Museum just received its largest donation to date — 134 works of art valued at $17 million and an $8 million endowment. Carol Folt formally announced the donation; Leena had tears in her eyes.

On a similar note, a stranger walking through our parking lot last night knocked on the newsroom window, asked if anyone wanted Red Bull and then dropped two cases of it at our front door — the single largest donation I've ever personally witnessed the DTH receive. I tweeted about it; Hannah cried, but that was technically unrelated.

Similarities abound.

QUICK HITS

  • Faculty and staff apparently have their own separate fitness course at UNC, partly because they don't have time during the day and partly because seeing students outside of class is like seeing a dog walk on its hind legs.
  • Carrboro just scored an approval rating lower than Donald Trump on a statewide poll, but it's supposedly literally only because no one in North Carolina knows her.
  • Here's what you can expect tonight when UNC men's basketball takes on the Hokies at home in the Smith Center.

IN DAILY CRIME

Someone reported "the close patrol of trees" on East Franklin Street at 1 in the morning Tuesday. Also, a list of things reported stolen in today's police blotter: mountain bike, MacBook Pro, handbag, leaf blower, Gucci purse.

IN THE ENVIRONMENT

(What remains of) The EPA is stepping in to address the disproportionate health effects of the state's hog farms on communities of color. Reported symptoms included upper respiratory issues, high blood pressure and higher rates of asthma in children.

IN OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING

UNC is still struggling to keep juniors and seniors living on campus, despite some improvements in the housing enrollment situation this year. Dorms just can't provide those homey feelings that leaky ceilings and sharing a bathroom with a cockroach gives me, you know?

IN WOMEN'S HEALTH

North Carolina was one of seven states that saw an increase in abortions between 2011 and 2014 — despite a declining number of abortion clinics in the state. The author of the study said they didn't have the time or resources to find out why there was an increase, though.
