DTH at a Glance: *political side eye*

Good morning!

Honestly, I don't have much to say today other than: Please read this letter we received from a fake Grayson Allen. It will make everything about your day marginally better.

— Danny

QUICK HITS

  • A new bill in the N.C. General Assembly is looking at raising the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21.
  • UNC researchers recently released a study that used MRI scans to predict autism in infants. They were able to accurately predict diagnoses for 80 percent of the infants.
  • Meet REMINGTON, a golden retriever employed by UNC athletics and the only service facility dog in the ACC. He knows over 100 commands and spells his name really pretentiously in all caps.

IN DAILY CRIME

Someone was reported smoking illicit narcotics on Ephesus Church Road on Monday. Someone else broke into a tractor and trailer on the side of N.C. 54.

IN STATE NEWS

The General Assembly is considering a deal on House Bill 2 at 9:15 this morning. The bill would repeal HB2, but it would also enact a moratorium on local non-discrimination ordinances like Charlotte’s until Dec. 1, 2020.

IN LOCAL SCHOOLS

Interest in football in local high schools has dropped so much that East Chapel Hill won't have a varsity program next season. It might be because of an increase in concussion studies recently, but regardless — relatable.

IN TOWN NEWS

Michelle Johnson recently announced her plan to step down from the Carrboro Board of Aldermen in May. That sounds much more scandalous than it actually is. She's moving to Oregon to work for an organization focused on racial equity.

IN META ANNOUNCEMENTS

The DTH is entering the annual process of selecting next year's editor-in-chief. Meet candidate (and current opinion editor) Tyler Fleming, who wants to focus on helping the DTH earn the community's trust. If you're interested, you can apply to join the selection committee here.
