Elections 2011: Morning voting holds steady

About as many voters as expected had cast their ballots at the East Franklin Street precinct in Chapel Hill as of 7:35 a.m., officials said. Eleven residents voted at the precinct, which includes Cobb Terrace and Bolin Heights Road, as well as parts of Rosemary Street and the UNC campus.


Chapel Hill council candidates talk town-gown and trucks

Chapel Hill Town Council candidates fielded questions centering on the town’s relationship with the University at a Thursday night forum held at UNC’s Campus Y. Issues near and dear to the University’s heart — like town-gown relationships and food trucks — took center stage at one of the last forums before Tuesday’s election.


Town council updates revisit Carolina North

At a Wednesday night meeting, the Chapel Hill Town Council received a compliance report and update on Carolina North. Carolina North, a planned research and academic campus two miles from UNC, has been a joint project between the university and the town since June 2009.


Board of Alderman approve conditional use permit

At a Tuesday night meeting, The Carrboro Board of Aldermen discussed a permit for a Weaver Street property and repealing the town’s controversial anti-lingering ordinance. The board unanimously approved a request for a Conditional Use Permit for the property located at 403 W.


"Alderfolk" discuss traffic

At a Tuesday night meeting, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen unanimously approved a traffic calming request for Rossburn Way, located in the Kent Woodlands neighborhood. The request to implement traffic calming measures was submitted by a neighborhood resident in Nov. 2010, and was re-evaluated again in July 2011.


Carrboro Candidates answer website criticism

At a Monday night forum, Carrboro Board of Aldermen candidates discussed ways to update the town’s website, which has been criticized as outdated and hard to navigate. But most candidates agreed that in a time of limited financial resources, updating the website is not a priority.


Carol Woods will look into affordable housing — and Franklin could see taco trucks

Carol Woods could be expanding to allow better access to the handicapped — but Chapel Hill Town Council members would also like to see it offer better access to those on tight budgets. The council held a public hearing Monday to discuss the proposed expansion of the Carol Woods retirement community. The council also held a hearing for a new draft regulating food trucks in the town.


Local officials talk potential library locations

On Thursday night the Orange County Board of Commissioners and the Carrboro Board of Aldermen held their first ever joint meeting. At the meeting, commissioners presented the proposed new criteria for the new location of the Southwest branch county public library.


Shelton Station at issue for Carrboro Board of Alderman

A mixed-use development planned for North Greensboro Street ran into some opposition but found a majority of support at a Carrboro Board of Alderman meeting Thursday evening. The board voted to approve the continued planning for the Shelton Station development six to one.


Carrboro candidates discuss development at Chamber of Commerce, Sierra Club forum

Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton and four candidates vying for seats on the town’s Board of Aldermen met Friday night for a forum co-sponsored by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce and the Orange/Chatham Sierra Club. The forum focused on environmental and economic questions, with candidates answering questions from the organizations and audience members on issues ranging from job creation to regional transit.
