DTH Archive. Lawrence Ferlinghetti, an esteemed poet, publisher, and owner of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers in San Francisco, attended UNC, worked for The Daily Tar Heel and pursued a journalism degree. 

Lawrence Ferlinghetti, UNC graduate and Beat poet, dies at 101

UNC alum Lawrence Ferlinghetti was an esteemed poet, publisher, and owner of the City Lights Bookstore and City Lights Publishing in San Francisco. Ferlinghetti was best known for publishing Beat poet Allen Ginsburg’s infamous poem “Howl" and subsequent arrest on charges of willfully printing indecent writings. He died on Feb. 27 at the age of 101.

Daily Tar Heel General Manager Erica Perel

After three years as DTH general manager, Erica Perel takes new job at Hussman School

Perel has played many different roles throughout her journalistic career. She was the DTH’s editor-in-chief and a reporter for The Charlotte Observer before later returning to the DTH as a member of the professional staff. Perel will be leaving the DTH newsroom in the coming month after 13 years of working professionally with the paper — three of which were as general manager.
