Franklin Street

Franklin Street sits at the northern edge of campus and it is the most famous stretch of pavement in Chapel Hill. Many of the businesses on Franklin Street cater to students. 

Students often rush Franklin Street after a win against Duke in basketball. Chapel Hill’s Homegrown Halloween event, which at its peak attracted nearly 32,000 college students from across the state, is held on Franklin Street.

Pucker up and pay up front: Chapel Hill is changing downtown parking payments

Goodbye time tickets, hello prepay: the Town of Chapel Hill's Lots to Love campaign is gearing up to try and transform parking downtown and your attitude toward it. “The switch is more than just moving from the old system to these new meters. It’s all one big initiative to create positive interactions with parking,” said Ran Northam, community safety communications specialist for the town. Lots of Love launched in late April, marking the switch in how you pay for parking and introducing the Park on the Hill Kissing Contest on Instagram.


Chapel Hill honors and celebrates culture in Sunday's international festival

International flags line Franklin Street in preparation for the upcoming Near and Far Festival in Chapel Hill this weekend, which will honor and celebrate the town's global community.  The festival will be Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at 140 West Franklin St. Plaza and will feature performances from Pline Mounzeo to Prema Natya Vidyalaya Dance School. The event will also have interactive exhibits such as UNC Global, the Chapel Hill Chinese School and a tasting tent.
