Swing dancers raise money for IFC

The Inter-Faith Council got into the swing of things Saturday at its second annual dance benefit at the Carrboro Century Center. The fund-raiser, sponsored by several Carrboro businesses, raised money for IFC's homeless shelter and other services. Kristin Lavergne, IFC programs director, said the sponsors designate where the money will go. "This is something we are approached about by people from congregations and other agencies who organize it all," she said.

Girls sign award-winning 'Nora'

Though all aspiring writers might dream of becoming published authors, not many expect that dream to come true before middle school. But four former fifth graders from Estes Hills Elementary School not only wrote and published an award-winning book - on Wednesday night, they also held a book signing. At the signing, which took place at Estes Hills Elementary, peers and parents were given the opportunity to meet one-on-one with young authors Susan Cavender, Zoe Gan, Vaishnavi Krishnan and Alison Smith.

Last-minute shoppers shouldn't be spooked

Chapel Hill police are expecting a crowd of 70,000 to overtake Franklin Street on Sunday. After 9 p.m. the street will be closed off in honor of ghosts, ghouls and goblins, in addition to those locals who plan to sport more atypical costumes. But with only two days left until the celebration, some Chapel Hill residents and students might be spooked that they have yet to find a costume. Fortunately for those last-minute shoppers, some of the best places to shop for creative costumes are not hard to find.

APS celebrates shelter's opening

The Animal Protection Society of Orange County saw light at the end of the tunnel this weekend with a grand opening celebration of its new adoption center. After two years of continuous controversy, APS, which previously managed the Orange County Animal Shelter on Airport Road, has moved out of the dog house and into new facilities in Mebane. The move comes months after the Orange County Board of Commissioners handed control of the animal shelter to the county, a decision stemming from reports of lack of accountability and operation problems with APS.

Hillsborough celebration revels in antiquity

About noon Saturday, downtown Hillsborough traveled back in time to celebrate its 250th anniversary. The downtown Hillsborough merchants sponsored the Harvest Moon Festival, which brought the locals back to what the town was like circa 1900. Julia Williams, owner of Brick Alley Books in the town's historic district and a member of the downtown Hillsborough merchants, helped organize the all-day festival.
