Foreigners Learn Thanksgiving Tradition

For most students, Thanksgiving break is a time for family and tradition. But UNC international students who are unable to return to their native countries must make alternate plans. Sharing a traditional meal with friends and sight-seeing are two popular options. Diana Levy, assistant director of the International Center, said the center provides a variety of services for international students. "We try to facilitate the adjustments of international students so they can accomplish their goals of studying and interacting with Americans," Levy said.

Class Gifts Leave Mark, Legacy for UNC History

No rule requires seniors to give back to the University, yet class gifts have continued to foster a philanthropic spirit at UNC since 1868. Each year, class officers seek out a lasting way for their class to be immortalized in UNC's history. This year's senior class voted this month to give an endowment to the Undergraduate Library. Emily Stevens, director of the Young Alumni Program, works with seniors to identify areas where gift money could be used best. "Every year is different," Stevens said. "Each gift is uniquely beneficial, worthwhile and affects many different people."

Keeping Everything Going Smoothly

When people listen to the University Day speaker tomorrow, they probably will be focusing on the words being said and not the work that goes on behind the scenes. The job of Mike Johnson, assistant director of the Student Union, is to keep it this way. "I do my best to make events happen and happen smoothly," Johnson said. Since 1996, Johnson has helped coordinate University Day as a full-time employee of the Student Union. He also worked with production services during his years as a UNC student.

Candidates Share Passion for Service

Community service and involvement in a wide range of activities are two qualities that seniors Rhonda Patterson and Melody Rodgers share. Both also share the desire for the title of Ms. Black Student Movement. "Ms. BSM is a way to reward people and say that the organization appreciates you and recognizes your work," said BSM Secretary Erin Davis.
