Lights to Boost Safety, Beauty of Franklin St.

New benches have been placed on Franklin Street and custom light poles and fixtures soon will follow as part of Streetscape, the Town Council's plan to reconstruct downtown Chapel Hill. The Streetscape initiative has been in operation since 1993 and is geared toward achieving the Town Council's vision for downtown.

Friends of Bolin Creek Get Town Support

The Friends of Bolin Creek proposed a Bolin Creek Corridor Open Space Plan to preserve the creek and its surroundings at Monday night's Chapel Hill Town Council meeting. The Friends of Bolin Creek is a conservationist group dedicated to preserving the Bolin Creek Corridor. "(Bolin Creek) is the heart and soul of Carrboro and Chapel Hill," said member Julie McClintock. The group was created a year ago by member Dave Cook, had its first meeting in April 2002 and became an officially recognized organization in July.

O.C. Chamber Has New Leader

The Orange County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently named Margaret Wood Cannell the chamber's new president. Cannell will officially take over Oct. 14. In the meantime, she will remain Orange County's economic development assistant, her position for the past five years. "The main difference between this new job and my old job is having an allegiance to chamber members," Cannell said.

Officials Discuss New High School

Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy said Monday that officials still need to continue discussion about a third high school, but local citizens and principals feel the need to expedite the building of the new school. Foy spoke with Valerie Foushee, chairwoman of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools board of education, and Barry Jacobs, chairman of Orange County Board of Commissioners, about the new high school.
