In official communications, UNC often refers to the value of inclusivity. As such, it makes sense for the University to follow through when new avenues of making students feel at home are presented.

Last week, UNC-Greensboro’s Board of Trustees voted to rename its former Aycock Auditorium, which we applaud. The man it was named after, Charles Aycock, was a former governor of North Carolina who rode to power as part of a white supremacist political movement. We are happy for the activists on UNC-G’s campus that made this change possible. Yet, this change on a campus less than an hour away from here reflects how sad it is that UNC persists in its rule to enforce a 16-year ban on changes to building names.

Brainstorming sessions, by definition, come up with all kinds of ideas, ranging from good to beyond the pale. The State Health Plan’s Board of Trustees imagined ways to limit or ameliorate costs, to be voted on Feb. 5 and passed on to the state treasurer for approval by the legislature. Most of their proposals suggested familiar cost-cutting tactics in the management of health care plans.

Edward Snowden’s revelations about the U.S. government’s unconstitutional spying on American citizens shocked the world. As national efforts to reign in the out-of-control surveillance state have stalled after some paltry, weak reforms, North Carolina’s state government should take concrete action to strike back at federal overreach into our private lives and signal hostility to spying on Americans.

The Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program is a national 10-week, paid summer research fellowship that aims to diversify applicants who want to pursue a graduate degree or faculty position in the humanities, social sciences or fine arts. Chase Rice is not a bad concert choice. He would be great for little frat court on a weekend. But, after canceling Homecoming, how is anyone “gonna wanna” have Chase Rice for Jubilee. To call the choice underwhelming would be an insult to Rice’s music, which defines underwhelming; this decision is horrendous.

Establishment institutions like universities, corporations and government seem designed to fail at taking meaningful steps to combat climate change.

The excitement of watching sports lies in its competitive, adrenaline-infused nature. Whether you love sports or hate them, it cannot be denied that they traditionally provoke heightened emotions of rage and anger both within the players and the fans. For most, this aggression simply ends with the euphoric or tragic feelings of either victory or defeat. However, this anger can turn into physical violence. Even more, traditionally obvious signs of domestic violence may be overlooked in the midst of the mayhem.

People always complain that cross-cultural conversations and dialogue are few and far in between at UNC. While this problem is not unique to our university, UNC exacerbates it by creating a housing system in which our first-year population is segmented in two demographically distinct pieces living in two completely separate bubbles.
