*magazine voice* Professors and textbook suppliers hate him.

Entering my sixth semester at UNC, I've had upwards of $2,000 worth of required textbooks for my classes, which says a lot considering I'm a journalism major and don't need to read anything other than news articles and BuzzFeed quizzes.

Some people, like the first-generation college students who had books purchased for them through the Hogan Book Award, they get a little outside help. Personally, I find astounding success in saving money by the fact that I've never purchased more than 20 percent of my required textbooks for a semester. Honestly, I don't even know how to check the system for what books I need.

QUICK HITS

  • After Saturday's six-hour meeting, UNC's Graduate and Professional Student Federation and Student Congress could finally be getting a divorce.
  • Eight first-generation college students received textbooks for their STEM classes thanks to the Hogan Book Award.
  • Congress is considering a bill that would require well-endowed universities (like UNC) to reduce tuition costs for middle- and low-income families.
  • UNC gymnastics finished up in fifth place at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational in Washington, D.C., over the weekend.
  • Behind Christmas, UNC refund check deposit day and my birthday, today is the most important day of the year. Happy birthday, Mom!

IN CAMPUS NEWS

There's a new LGBTQ-affirming Residential Learning Program coming out in 2016. It's going to be called Pride Place, and it's somewhere for students who have ever felt unsafe or unwelcome because of their identities in traditional housing at UNC. It's still not gender-nonspecific housing, but baby steps.

IN TOWN NEWS

If you're looking for up-and-coming date suggestions, the BP/Family Fare Service Station is getting an outdoor seating area. It's also adding two additional pump stations, and (as far as I can tell) it will continue to sell Four Loko. Let me know, boys.

IN TRANSIT NEWS

My fellow lazy students can now rent scooters for $500. You can even choose the #brand and have it delivered to you. Can guarantee it's as close to feeling like a UNC student-athlete as you'll ever get.

IN DRAMATIC NEWS

A UNC law professor is facing charges from the North Carolina State Bar. Christine Mumma, executive director of the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence, is being charged for acting dishonestly during a 2013 investigation to exonerate a man accused of murder.

IN THE BLOGS

Stop taking your visiting parents to TOPO. I've been to TOPO exactly once for exactly 10 minutes, so the most I can fairly criticize is that its birthday shot is too sweet to be a real shot. But that aside, there are tons of more original things to do with your visiting family in Chapel Hill. And we made a list to prove it.
