The Daily Tar Heel
DTH at a Glance

I will always remember the day I first heard someone call a shopping cart a "buggy"

Moving to the South from the North (or mid-Atlantic) is a lot harder of a transition than you'd think. When I moved here in the third grade, I was almost placed in a low-level language arts class because I started consistently failing my spelling quizzes — which my parents eventually found out was because I couldn't understand my teacher's accent.

My family was haunted by neighbors we didn't know waving at us and strangers stopping us in the grocery store "just to talk." More than a decade later, people still tease me for how I say the preposition "on."

As our Assistant Arts & Entertainment Editor Ryan Schocket put it, moving to the South is an adjustment. What makes it worth it is Chapel Hill and the beautiful culture of being a Tar Heel.

QUICK HITS

  • Bradley Opere was officially sworn in as UNC's student body president, and he says he was as deeply and personally affected by Marcus Paige's last 3-pointer as the rest of us.
  • Recently, UNC students really haven't been using lawyers in Honor Court proceedings — despite a 2014 state law allowing them in non-academic cases.
  • Thousands of Tar Heels waited at the Smith Center for the return of their basketball team yesterday, marking the end of what Coach Roy Williams called "the most fun I’ve ever had as a college basketball coach."
  • A recent study from N.C. State is suggesting discipline in higher education doesn't harbor a ton of racial bias, which is surprising considering the disparities have been found in discipline as early as in preschool.

IN TOWN NEWS

Some of Chapel Hill's crosswalks just got a lot more fabulous. The "colorful crosswalks" are painted with green and blue stripes to encourage street safety and reinforce the town's aesthetic. Some residents, though, are a little unhappy with this new-age progressivism driving out traditional white ladder designs.

IN STATE NEWS

Duke students are in the middle of a heated sit-in to protest a supposed two-year cover-up by the school's administration. In August 2014, traffic controller Shelvia Underwood said she was struck by a Porsche and was called a racial slur. The car's plate number was traced to Duke Executive Vice President Tallman Trask III, but protestors say nothing ever really came of the case.

IN OUR OPINION

Ryan Schocket just articulated the realization every out-of-stater comes to: Once you get past how suspiciously (and arguably fake) friendly Southerners are, UNC sports, culture and nightlife are really, really beautiful.

IN UNDER-APPRECIATED SPORTS

The women's rugby team at UNC has a chance to compete in Spring Championships. But only if they can fundraise enough to get there, which they're trying to do right now. Do you wanna be the one to tell the women's rugby team no? I don't.
