Rabinowitz, political science professor, dies in Norway

George Rabinowitz, a political science professor known for his groundbreaking work in the field of American politics, died this weekend from a heart attack. Evelyne Huber, chairwoman of the political science department, was notified Saturday morning of Rabinowitz’s death in an email from his wife, Stuart Macdonald, said John Stephens, a political science professor. Rabinowitz and his wife were in Trondheim, Norway conducting research.

UNC humanities professors host innovation seminar

It’s often more difficult for history professors or English students to craft solutions to real-world problems than it is for doctors or scientists. But a panel of 10 humanities professors made a case for the liberal arts Monday afternoon, saying those in humanities fields should take a Socratic approach and ask questions about how their studies can extend beyond the classroom.

Fixed-term and retired faculty could have say at Faculty Council meetings

The committee on University government could give fixed-term and retired faculty a firmer voice in faculty matters at today’s Faculty Council meeting. The committee will vote on a proposal that could amend the faculty code to give retired faculty a say at Faculty Council meetings. Another amendment would allow fixed-term faculty to vote on whether to hire or promote other fixed-term faculty members.

Weintraub named new Dentistry dean

At two airports hundreds of miles apart, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Bruce Carney saw two directions for the School of Dentistry. In San Francisco, he met Jane Weintraub, a dentistry professor at the University of California, San Francisco.
