Look Beyond Our Material Things

These are my clothes. Away from me they go. Shiny shoes, running shoes and flip-flops shall carry me no more. Silver hoops in my ears, stud through my tongue, ring in my navel.Gone.Just a few weeks ago, I gave a stranger a ride to Durham in my scraggly car. As I pumped gas, he showed me his wallet and cellular phone and said he had money. He just needed a ride to Durham because his car had quit quite unexpectedly. Now, quite unexpectedly, my car has sputtered out for the time being. Gone is convenience through the automobile.

Tift Merritt's Timeless Music Takes Off

Time slows around alt-country singer-songwriter Tift Merritt. She speaks with a slight drawl -- her voice has an unhurried but direct quality, a casualness that is both refreshing and informal. When she stubs out her Camel Light, Merritt languidly spins it around the ashtray, extinguishing it with short, absent-minded jabs. Her music is equally timeless. Classic without sounding dated, Merritt's songs and guitar playing move at their own pace.

Unmoving `Mexican' Ignores Its Strengths

The Mexican2 StarsThe pairing of superstars Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts in "The Mexican" might be a dream come true to some -- but after viewing the film, you may change your mind and decide it's more like a nightmare.Pitt and Roberts are hardly ever on screen together, and hit man Leroy (James Gandolfini, from HBO's "The Sopranos") has more chemistry with Roberts than Pitt. Megastars are naturally expected to deliver a jewel of a film. When they don't, all the hype only leads to greater disappointment.

Mitchell's Recent Column Fails to Fully Recognize`God-Designed Sex'

TO THE EDITOR:I choose not to read Cosmopolitan or watch MTV because I do not find their information appealing. While I may find insight in an article or two, the overwhelming content of the magazine and the shows are driven by sex, selfishness and downright sin. My only way of protest is to simply not purchase or endorse the magazine or watch MTV.So, when I choose to pick up The Daily Tar Heel and read it, I'm endorsing it. I'm saying I believe the content of this newspaper is worth my time.

Arquette, Dog, Run Out of Laughs In Juvenile, Tasteless `See Spot Run'

See Spot Run1 StarYou know the disclaimer about how "no animals were harmed during the making of this movie?" I'm beginning to think theaters should air some kind of warning during the previews concerning the harm the audience might experience while watching a terrible flick. After suffering through "See Spot Run," my only emotion was pity for all the parents who were dragged to it by their 8-year-old progeny. And my only question: Why is a college paper reviewing this?!"Spot" is a desperate PG-comedy about a highly trained dog (Spot, a.k.a.

Sheik, Playwright Collaborate on Moon

Duncan SheikPhantom Moon3 Stars Duncan Sheik burst onto the music scene in 1997 with his hit "Barely Breathing." His self-titled 1996 debut and his sophomore effort, 1998's Humming, were filled with an upbeat melodic pop and silky balladry that arguably ranked him among the decade's finest singer/songwriters. This week, Duncan Sheik returns to the scene with Phantom Moon, an album that finds the artist collaborating with playwright Steven Sater.

Society Has Responsibility To Preserve Resources For Continued Stability\

TO THE EDITOR:If you open any newspaper or magazine, you can find a tragic tale of poverty or what I refer to as the "have-nots." We read this tragic tale, feel a moment of sorrow and move on to the stock quotes, comics or arts and leisure section, forgetting this glimpse into the alien community of the "have-nots." We have myriad social programs and caring people in this world who spend countless dollars and hours with the end result of greater poverty and no end to it in sight.

DTH Editor's Column Unnecessarily Tarnished Reid Chaney's Reputation

TO THE EDITOR:After reading Monday's op-ed on Reid Chaney and the Carolina Athletic Association, I was absolutely astonished. You would think that as the chief editor of our school newspaper, Matt Dees would want to show some respect and consideration for his fellow students. Obviously, this isn't the case. Reid Chaney has just been elected and doesn't even start his term until next month. I feel that his reputation is being ruined before he's even had the chance to show us what he's got.

UNC Star Charts: Wash Your Dreads, Hippies

I was born under a bad sign. Literally.I'm a cancer, although this comes as no surprise to many of you out there who have been saying all along, "that Povill kid's nothing but a damned cancer." Still, it bugs me to be forever associated with the "silent killer" (not to be confused with the "silent-but-deadly," with which I am also often associated). To make matters worse, the animal that represents cancers is the crab. Yes, we're crabs. As if cancer didn't carry enough negative connotations, they throw some pubic lice into the mix, just for good measure.
