Faculty Addresses Gamut of Issues

Evolution Revived in Kansas Schools

After being under fire from scientific circles for more than a year, the Kansas Board of Education voted last week to restore evolution to the state's curriculum.The board voted 7-3 to repeal the previous standards, which de-emphasized the role of evolution in the state's scientific standards for education.Janet Waugh, board vice chairwoman, said the repeal was caused by the controversial nature of the original statutes and the departure of two board members after last fall's elections. The two, including former Chairwoman Linda Holloway, voted for de-emphasizing evolution in 1999.

Chapel Hill Town Council members and Orange County's state legislative delegation discussed potential problems with the Master Plan during a breakfast meeting at the Carolina Inn on Friday.Sens. TaxWatch Questions New Pool

A local watchdog group has raised concerns about a proposed aquatic center in Chapel Hill and is directing them to Mayor Rosemary Waldorf.In a letter he sent to the mayor Tuesday, John Ryan, a member of TaxWatch, questioned the need for new pools. Instead, he suggested using Chapel Hill buses to shuttle people to Triangle Sportsplex in Hillsborough."We want to put those buses to work," Ryan said later.
