Another Year, Another Shot at Virginia

It was a piercing alarm, a wake-up call that at first shook the team's confidence but eventually served as a rallying point. When the North Carolina men's soccer team lost 3-1 to Virginia on Sept. 24 last season, its players realized there was a need for change. "It was losing to them that made us refocus," UNC defender Chris Leitch said. "They beat us and made us take the mindset that there were better teams out there."

Fans Can Help Aid Victims of Attacks

Football fans attending Saturday's matchup between North Carolina and Florida State can make donations to a new scholarship fund that will benefit families directly affected by the nation's Sept. 11 tragedy. The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund was created to provide assistance for postsecondary education to financially needy children and spouses of those killed or permanently disabled in last week's terrorist attacks.

UNC's Plan to Get Durant in Not Settled, But Certain

In his first two appearances, North Carolina backup quarterback Darian Durant provided the Tar Heels with a spark to help move the offense. Although Durant couldn't produce the same spark against Texas, the redshirt freshman has impressed UNC coach John Bunting and offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill enough that Durant's entrance into the second half of Saturday's game against Florida State is already planned.

Volleyball Blanks East Carolina

GREENVILLE -- The North Carolina volleyball team defeated East Carolina 3-0 on Tuesday night at Williams Arena. The Tar Heels won by scores of 30-23, 30-26 and 30-16. The Tar Heels (6-3) were led by junior outside hitter Laura Greene, who recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs. Greene also tallied four service aces on the night. Molly Pyles and Holly Strauss each recorded eight kills for the Tar Heels with Pyles also recording six digs and Strauss totaling four digs and three block assists. Malaika Underwood led UNC in assists with 22.

`It was the Scariest Thing I'd Ever Seen'

People were screaming. Women were crying. Smoke filled the air and made it difficult to see. Confusion engulfed the streets of New York City on Tuesday. And former North Carolina basketball walk-on Jim Everett was in the middle of it all. Shortly after 9 a.m., a woman in Everett's Series 7 stockbroker exam class received a call on her cell phone. She told the class that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center -- only three blocks from their class at 17 Battery Park.

Tar Heels Start, Finish Strong Against UNC-G

The similarities are there, on the page and on the field. Five games into the North Carolina men's soccer season, UNC players may have a tough time distinguishing between 2000 and 2001. Sean McGinty scored two first-half goals, but UNC struggled to hold on to beat UNC-Greensboro 2-1 on Sunday at Fetzer Field. "We've yet to play a full 90-minute game this season," McGinty said.

Volleyball Tops Tribe Despite Early Setback

Coming off a 3-2 loss at Santa Clara last Sunday and an emotional week that featured a number of canceled matches and practices, signs of a potential letdown were in place for the North Carolina volleyball team against William & Mary. And after losing the first game and struggling throughout the second, the Tar Heels rebounded to win the match 3-1. After being outscored 10-4 to end the first game, a 30-22 loss, UNC found themselves trailing again, 28-27, near the end of game two.

Durant To See Earlier Action

Ronald Curry is still the starting quarterback for the North Carolina football team, but redshirt freshman backup Darian Durant has played well enough to earn an expanded role heading into next week's game against Florida State. UNC coach John Bunting said Wednesday he plans to field Durant earlier than normal in the Sept. 22 game, when the sixth-ranked Seminoles come to Kenan Stadium for a noon matchup.

Field Hockey's Lingo, Tran Head to France

This morning, North Carolina field hockey players Carrie Lingo and Amy Tran tossed their equipment and luggage into Lingo's car and headed in the direction of Virginia Beach. Lingo and Tran weren't on their way to vacation -- they're meeting up with their teammates on the U.S. national field hockey team. Once all of the team's members meet, they will climb aboard a bus bound for Washington, D.C. From Washington, the team flies to France for a World Cup qualifying tournament.

UNC (4-3) was scheduled to play Pepperdine, Georgia and Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the tournament. Instead North Carolina opens its home campaign at Carmichael Auditorium against the 5-1 Tribe. UNC-G Comes to Town To Face Men's Soccer The North Carolina men's soccer team will play UNC-Greensboro at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fetzer Field.

ACC Sports Postponed For 3 Days

Balancing the need to stand strong and continue its scheduled week and the need to respect the massive loss of life, the ACC chose Wednesday to pause, but not cancel its athletic events through Saturday. North Carolina's 1:30 p.m. Saturday football game against Southern Methodist has been rescheduled for Dec. 1. "That game is going to get played, absolutely," UNC-Chapel Hill Director of Athleticck Baddour said.

While Kluegel and Reddick were in Chicago on Sunday donning the stars and stripes of the U.S. women's national soccer team, the North Carolina women's soccer team passed the second of its first two tests without the duo. The Tar Heels beat No. 8 Penn State 3-0 Sunday at Fetzer Field, the second of two shutouts they recorded during this weekend's Carolina Nike Classic. UNC blanked Charlotte 5-0 on Friday.

Longhorns Stampede Over Tar Heels

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas controlled Saturday's football game with North Carolina so much that by its end, the Longhorns got to choose their final score. Brett Robin scored a touchdown for a 44-14 lead with 36 seconds remaining in the game. The Longhorns lined up for a two-point conversion, backup quarterback Major Applewhite took the snap and then took a knee.

Men's Soccer Falls on Road to Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS -- The North Carolina men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at No. 13 Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon in the Saint Louis Soccer Classic at Robert R. Hermann Stadium, finishing the weekend 1-1. The No. 12 Tar Heels beat Cincinnati 2-1 on Friday. Saint Louis (3-0) got the game-winner with a minute left in the contest, taking advantage of a defensive breakdown by UNC (3-1) and beating Tar Heel goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey in a one-on-one battle to the right of the net.

Women's Soccer Shuts Out Weekend Foes

The Penn State women's soccer team began Sunday's game against No. 1 North Carolina with the same intensity as the thunder clouds threatening Fetzer Field. But fortunately for the Tar Heels, the Nittany Lion attack dissipated as quickly as the inclement weather. UNC held off Penn State's early offensive onslaught and defeated the No. 8 Nittany Lions 3-0. The win was the second of the weekend for North Carolina. The Tar Heels opened play in the Carolina Nike Classic with a 5-0 victory against Charlotte on Friday.
