UNC Joins List of Schools Courting WMU's Darnell

Kathy Beauregard has a tough task on her hands this weekend. Western Michigan is getting ready for Saturday's MAC Championship game against Marshall. The contest will be televised nationally, and the winner earns a trip to the Motor City Bowl in Detroit. Beauregard, Western Michigan's athletic director, says her No. 1 priority is making sure her student-athletes are prepared for the game. She wants them focused solely on the Thundering Herd. That's going to be difficult considering Western Michigan's coach is at the center of a nationwide distraction.

Coach: Carrieri Headed To Pros At Season's End

North Carolina striker Chris Carrieri has called Fetzer Field home during the past three years. For his career, Carrieri has netted 24 goals - including seven game-winners - and tallied 11 assists in 36 home matches. Although Carrieri is a junior, Saturday's national quarterfinal against two-time defending national champion Indiana will likely be his last contest before a Chapel Hill crowd. Tar Heel coach Elmar Bolowich said Tuesday in a national teleconference that Carrieri has decided to play professionally next season in Major League Soccer. "We have, actually, a junior who a

Tar Heels, Spartans Face Young Season's First Tests

The records of North Carolina and Michigan State show that each team has played three regular season games in the 2000-01 season. But neither team has faced a true test - until tonight. The sixth-ranked Tar Heels travel to East Lansing, Mich., to take on the third-ranked Spartans in a battle of undefeated teams at the Breslin Center at 7:30 p.m. "You don't really know exactly where you're at this early in the season," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "Some people have asked if it's too early to play a team like North Carolina." The answer to that question remains to be seen.

VT Coach Decides to Stay Put

Jim Weaver made the prediction last Tuesday. "I full well expect - when the dust settles - that Frank Beamer will still be at Virginia Tech," Weaver, Virginia Tech's athletic director, told The Daily Tar Heel. The dust finally settled Monday. After three days filled with meetings with administrators in Blacksburg, Va., and Chapel Hill and talk of seven-figure salaries, Beamer made Weaver's wish come true. Beamer announced at a press conference Monday afternoon that he would remain the head football coach at Virginia Tech.

Dominant or Not, Women Advance

Maybe it was domination. Maybe it wasn't. The point is arguable. But what is certain is the fact that the North Carolina women's soccer team is headed back to the NCAA final four for the 19th time in as many tries. The Tar Heels got two goals from senior forward Meredith Florance as they defeated Connecticut 3-0 at Fetzer Field on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Women's College Cup. "It was not too much dominance on one team today like they usually are," said Connecticut coach Len Tsantiris, who watched his team go out in the round of eight for the fifth time in six years.

Kluegel Expects to Play Despite Sprained Ankle

If Anson Dorrance was afraid, he wasn't showing it. The North Carolina women's soccer coach had just learned that he might be without star midfielder Jena Kluegel for Friday's NCAA semifinal match against Notre Dame. The Tar Heels had already been playing without forward Susan Bush, who was lost for the season Oct. 25 with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. Could the Tar Heels actually win the national championship, their 16th in 19 years, without Kluegel and Bush? "I don't know," Dorrance said.

No. 1 Men Move on To Final 8

Before the NCAA tournament, Dean Smith sent North Carolina men's soccer coach Elmar Bolowich a note with a simple message. Survive and advance. The Tar Heels survived a lackluster first half and scored three second-half goals to advance to the quarterfinals of the Men's College Cup with a 3-1 victory against Rhode Island on Sunday at Fetzer Field. "They picked up on that," Bolowich said of his players' response to the note.

Freshman Leads ODU in Win Against UNC

Three years ago, Corrina Turner spent her falls and winters playing the clarinet in the marching band at Monsignor Edward Pace in Miami. Since then, the 6-foot-6 Old Dominion freshman has spent them lighting up opposing basketball teams. Saturday was no exception. Turner came off the bench for 21 points and 15 rebounds to send the Lady Monarchs past North Carolina 91-77 for their first win of the season. "Certainly, Corrina Turner had her coming-out party today," ODU coach Wendy Larry said. Turner just entered her third season of basketball.

Laycock Makes Most Of Chance

Matt Laycock knows how to use his time wisely. The redshirt junior's playing time had been limited to 20 minutes a game due to knee and hamstring injuries during his first three years at North Carolina. This year, the midfielder has only made seven appearances. But that didn't stop him from making an impact when his team needed him on Sunday. Laycock scored two goals to rally the Tar Heels from a 2-0 deficit and send the game into overtime.

Brown Delivers in Tar Heels' Blowout Win

The North Carolina women's basketball team faced one major question as it opened its season last week. Everyone wanted to know if sophomore Coretta Brown could be an effective point guard. Brown's answer? A resounding yes. She scored 17 points and handed out a school-record 16 assists in the Tar Heels' 101-33 home-opening victory against North Carolina A&T on Tuesday night. "I've been telling people all along that Coretta is a great player," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "Our unproven point guard has proven herself now.

Donnan, Walker Take Names Out of Hat

North Carolina Director of Athletics Dick Baddour is convinced he has an attractive football program to sell. But Baddour's task of finding a new coach might just be a little tougher than planned. One day after Carl Torbush was fired as UNC's coach, Northwestern coach Randy Walker and Georgia coach Jim Donnan said they weren't interested in the job. Walker, who was an assistant coach at UNC from 1978-87, released a statement that said he would remain the Wildcats' coach. "I am not interested in the coaching job at North Carolina or any other coaching position," Walker said in th

Cross Country Takes 12th Place at NCAAs

A fourth-place finish by freshman Shalane Flanagan in 20 minutes, 42 seconds led North Carolina's women's cross country team to a 12th-place team finish at the NCAA Championships in Iowa. The finish placed the Tar Heels above all its preseason predictions. UNC placed sixth last year, but lost several seniors from that squad. The season began with more than 300 teams in the running for a chance to participate in the NCAA Championships, a number that dwindled to 31 after the Southeast Regionals on Nov. 11.

Peppers Leaps Atop UNC Record Book

DURHAM - Julius Peppers might be North Carolina's best defensive player, but the sophomore end is still learning from his teammates. Take Saturday's 59-21 win against Duke for example. Peppers sacked Blue Devil quarterback D. Bryant on the last play of the first quarter, jarring the ball loose. UNC's Joey Evans scooped it up on the 26-yard line and took off for the end zone. Evans shook one tackle but was finally brought down on the 1. "I was just trying to score," Evans said. "I should have dove.

Smart Play Leads Tar Heels to ACC Title

WINSTON SALEM - Good teams play well when they need to. During much of the season, the North Carolina volleyball team played like it was fighting itself. While the Tar Heels usually outplayed their opponents, UNC couldn't always finish them off. Mental mistakes and a lack of focus made some of North Carolina's regular-season matches closer than they should have been. But that wasn't the case this past weekend. The Tar Heels entered the ACC tournament seeded No. 2 and left as conference champions.

Coach Declines Baddour's Offer To Step Down

On Nov. 22, 1999, UNC Director of Athletics Dick Baddour sat in the Bowles Room at Koury Natatorium and announced his support for Carl Torbush as the school's head football coach. On Monday, 364 days later, Baddour found himself in the same place. This time, however, he was there to announce that Torbush had been fired. "I have completed a review of the football program, and the decision has been made not to retain Carl Torbush as the head football coach at the University of North Carolina," said Baddour, who sat beside Chancellor James Moeser at a press conference.

Decision Shocks Tar Heel Players

The team meeting on the second floor of the Frank H. Kenan Football Center started at 2:15 p.m. like it does every Monday. Members of the North Carolina football team watched highlight film from their victory against Duke on Saturday. The players later voted on offensive and defensive MVPs for the season. UNC coach Carl Torbush went in front of the team to tell his players he was lobbying for a bowl berth.

Tar Heels Become Eligible for Bowl

Players and coaches had said all along that they could do it. But somehow, some way, it just never got done. Until Saturday. In what might have been its final contest of the season, the North Carolina football team put together a complete game. The Tar Heels scored on offense, defense and special teams as they pounded Duke 59-21 in front of 24,673 spectators at Wallace Wade Stadium. The win, UNC's third in a row, made the team bowl eligible.
