Bonds, Interest Rates May Help Deficit

Some financial experts say the Federal Reserve Board's recent effort to stave off an impending economic slow-down by lowering interest rates could save the state of North Carolina millions of dollars. Despite a budget deficit of nearly $800 million, the state will start selling municipal bonds to its citizens in March to finance the $3.1 billion higher education package that passed Nov.

Living 15 Minutes Less Powerful

Last week's column was my most controversial yet. I had intense, hourlong arguments about it with people I don't know as well as with good friends. Also, three professors shared their compliments, and I got one thankful e-mail from a Native American woman. In all the conversations I had about it, I recognized a need for improvement. This week, I widen my angle.

Scalping Duke Tickets Takes Them From Deserving Fans

Scalping sports tickets is probably one of the easiest ways for Carolina students to make money. We get the tickets for free, and we sell 'em for a fortune. Tickets go up on e-Bay, and they get sold over the phone and e-mail. It can be a pretty profitable venture. Especially for Duke University vs. UNC tickets.I heard a story last week in which a couple of graduate students in a one-year graduate program sold their seventh-row tickets for $500 each.

To raise spirit in the Smith Center, a group of 15 students have dubbed UNC men's basketball fans Doherty's Disciples, a rival to Duke University's Cameron Crazies.Seniors Will Lloyd, Michael Bucy, Jesse Moore and Will Morris collaborated with several Carolina Athletic Association officials to coin the new nickname, which sprung from a recent Durham Herald-Sun article calling UNC students the Carolina Crazies."I refuse to be labeled the Carolina Crazies," said Lloyd, this year's Mr. UNC.

Chaney Would Make CAA More Effcient as Its President

Reid Chaney should be the next Carolina Athletic Association president. Reid has the drive to be a terrific CAA president, which is clearly seen in his innovative ideas for CAA. If Reid is elected president, he will bring a new face to the office. This will allow new views to be expressed, rather than relying on what has worked in the past. While many plans in place right now are first-rate, there are several alterations that can make the organization much better.

Bible Preaches God's Love, Not Just Wrath, Punishment for Sin\

TO THE EDITOR:In his Jan. 25 letter to the editor, Dave Premawardhana disagreed with my use of the Bible to argue against personal sexual sin and said the Bible teaches Christians to speak out against larger social problems. He feels that the type of argument I made is inconsistent with Jesus' teachings on love contained in the Gospels.I believe Mr.

Cavaliers Drain Baskets, Tar Heels

Planned Parenthood Clarifies Point About Morning-After Pill\

TO THE EDITOR:There are a few things from Lee Spears' article ("Morning-After Pill Easier to Obtain" Feb. 20) that I believe need clarification. Spears states that emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) can be obtained without first consulting a doctor. Though women do not have to schedule a doctor's appointment or go to a doctor's office, a doctor or clinician must approve their prescription before it can be given. This is an integral part of the Dial EC project. Emergency contraception is a safe and effective backup method.

Spring Sports - Track Looks to Reclaim Dominance in ACC

North Carolina's men and women's track and field teams are heading into the outdoor season in an unfamiliar position. But the last two years have culminated in a third- and second-place finish -- respectable, but below UNC's standards."For the women, really, we're pretty doggone strong in all areas," UNC coach Dennis Craddock said. "Pick it up," yells the coxswain. The race begins as the blades knife through the surface of the water with unparalleled fury. The eight-meter shell's speed increases with the pull of both the starboard and portside. The shell cuts through the water with the machine-like efficiency of the stroke of the team.Yet people outside the rowing community might not know or understand one of the most competitive women's sports at North Carolina.People probably also do not know the outlook for this spring's team of rowers.
