Hospitals Reply to List, Pledge More Education

Officials at the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Facility Services on Monday accepted a response from UNC Hospitals to deficiencies cited by the division earlier this month. Tom Hughes, a spokesman for UNC Hospitals, said hospital officials sent the response by Federal Express on June 19. The response was due June 14.

UNC Hospitals Late in Response to Deficiencies

Officials at UNC Hospitals failed to submit their response to deficiencies identified in a letter from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Facility Services on time. The hospital's response was due June 14, 10 working days after the officials' receipt of the letter, said Jim Jones, media representative for the Department of Health and Human Services. Hospital officials met last week to prepare a plan of action in response to deficiencies identified by the health department.

C-TOPS Gives Freshmen Glimpse of Life at UNC

It is summer, and the campus teems with small groups of incoming students and their families touring and attending programs to learn more about the University. June 6 was the first session of the C-TOPS orientation program with 250 incoming students registered to participate. This year's C-TOPS has 15 sessions and 14 orientation leaders. The last of the sessions will end Aug. 16. Leeanne Price, a sophomore orientation leader, said the opening sessions went well. "Everything is very smooth," she said. "The whole university has worked hard to make this happen."

Public Health Breaks Ground On $38.6M Research Center

University and School of Public Health officials broke ground Thursday on a project that will turn a parking lot into a state-of-the-art research center. Construction on the school's Rosenau parking lot is slated to begin June 2002, and the 125,000-square-foot research center is expected to open in two years. The facility will provide 25 research laboratories, classrooms, an auditorium and office space for faculty, staff and students.

Club Gets Medieval At Dinner

The flavors of the Middle Ages came to Graham Memorial on Sunday in a sumptuous and authentic 14th- to 16th- century European meal. The Carolina Association for Medieval Studies organized the seven-course feast for the University community. Chefs from Durham's Four Square Restaurant served more than 20 guests authentic medieval meals. As guests strolled in, servers greeted them with rose water -- a substitute for napkins -- leaving a sweet fragrance on their hands before and during the meal.

New Director to Lead Black Cultural Center

UNC?s Sonja H. Stone Black Cultural Center is one step closer to having a new leader. Joseph Jordan, head of Atlanta?s Auburn Avenue Research Library on African-American Culture, has been offered the position of BCC director. If approved at the July 26 Board of Trustees meeting, Jordan will replace Interim Director Harry Amana on Aug. 13. Amana, a professor of journalism and mass communication at the University, has served as interim director since 1999. Provost Robert Shelton said he thinks Jordan was an excellent choice out of a number of qualified applicants for the position.

Congress Opposes Tuition Hikes

Student Congress unanimously passed a resolution June 13 opposing proposed tuition increases. The resolution, sponsored by Student Body President Justin Young, claims students have not been given enough time to prepare for the proposed five-percent increase and may not be able to afford it. Young said at the meeting that it is not appropriate for the legislature to take such action during the summer. "The bill in the proposed budget comes at a time when students are not around and I think that is unfair," Young said.
