'Dinner' Serves Moving Slice of Real Life

"Dinner With Friends" PlayMakers Repertory Company Sunday, Jan. 19 4 Stars Above the newly squared, wood-covered Paul Green Theatre stage, a sparkling pine dinner table slowly descends on four taut cables. Dressed with amber-tinted wine glasses, frosty green dishes and a stately French press pot, it is a gathering place of affluence, creativity and refined taste, fresh from the glossy pages of Ross-Simons and Williams-Sonoma. It also is where we first meet the central characters of Donald Margulies' Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Dinner With Friends."

Simpson Writes With Spirit of N.C. Native

In terms of celebrity professors, North Carolina native Bland Simpson is among UNC's most prominent. Along with his position as director of the creative writing program, Simpson has attracted national attention as an accomplished writer and as a member of a Tony Award-winning band, the Red Clay Ramblers. But despite this widespread acclaim, Simpson has kept his talents and interests close to home. Simpson, who was raised in both Elizabeth City and Chapel Hill, said his experiences roaming through the North Carolina landscape have left a strong impression on him.

SHAC to Raise Funds for Area Health

Tonight at Pantana Bob's, students have the opportunity to buy a few drinks for a good cause. The Student Health Action Coalition, a student group that provides free health care to the local community, will be hosting a concert to benefit its programming this year. Entirely student-run, SHAC offers a variety of medical and dental services to the public. Starting at 6 p.m.

PlayMakers To Conduct Open Tryouts

PlayMakers Repertory Company will open its doors to students and the community next week as it holds auditions for this spring's production of "Salome." The play, originally written in French by Oscar Wilde, is an erotically charged retelling of the Biblical tale of Salome the dancer. Banned from performance in Victorian England, the story focuses on Salome's lust for John the Baptist as well as the decadence of human passion.

UNC Alumnus Exhibits Art at Ackland

As most students did their best to stay out of the rain Friday morning, staff at the Ackland Art Museum were busy putting the final touches on a new exhibition, "Capturing the Essence: Portraits by Ben Long." The small show features 14 original portraits by Long, a former UNC creative writing student who received a Distinguished Alumnus Award this weekend during University Day ceremonies. Long is best known for his large-scale frescos, which have been commissioned for both religious and municipal buildings across North Carolina.

'Party People' Throws Out History for Musical Myth

"24 Hour Party People" 4 Stars Never has pathological lying been so appealing. "24 Hour Party People," the newest import from England, tells the approximate history of the Manchester music scene from the late '70s to the early '90s through the eyes of Tony Wilson. Steve Coogan plays Wilson, a television journalist and co-founder of Factory Records, the innovative label that managed the likes of Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays.
