Senate hopeful looks to surprise

Robert "Whit" Whitfield, the relatively unknown Republican candidate for the 23rd District of the N.C. Senate, is hoping to unseat heavily favored Democratic incumbent, Ellie Kinnaird, next week. He filed his candidacy soon after losing in the Republican primaries to Todd Batchelor for the 4th District seat of the U.S. House.

Republicans enjoy picnic, politics

Orange County Republicans met at the Palmer's Grove Community Center in Hillsborough to raise awareness for the political party in a mostly Democratic county. The county has more than twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans, with 45,378 and 19,070, respectively. "We started (this event) last year at this location as a time to get together," said Sandy Peterson, chairwoman of the event.

New drug could halt spreading of HIV

A newly discovered drug might someday soon lead to the prevention of the spreading of HIV in humans. The drug, which was applied to the vaginal surface of monkeys 15 minutes before exposure to the immunodeficiency virus simian HIV, has yet to be tested on humans. A group of scientists, led by Ronald Veazey from the Tulane National Primate Research Center, reported that the drug protected the animals from infection.

Candidates debate U.S. safety issues

While President Bush and Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry are quick to criticize each other's tactics on homeland security, their platforms on how best to keep the nation safe are largely similar. But with the Nov. 2 general election less than a month away, both candidates are making a final push to persuade voters that theirs is the best path for homeland security.

Edwards works to rally students

DURHAM - Cate Edwards, daughter of Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards, spoke Saturday at Duke University about the closeness of the presidential race and the need for student voters to rally behind her father. Standing near, among other things, a woman in roller blades and a large sandwich board endorsing the candidacy of John Edwards and Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, Cate Edwards also talked about the policies Kerry would implement if elected.
