PIT TALK

A photo of Michael Jordan in Granville Towers circa 1983, found on Reddit.

It’s only cool if Michael Jordan does it.

Check out this photo of one of UNC’s basketball greats in his room in Granville Towers in the 1980s. What do you think? Here’s what some students are saying: “He looks familiar…” — Calvary Diggs “He looks like he’s having fun.” — Scott Fentress “Oh! He’s singing in the rain!” — Camilla Brewer

Scandalous reads abound in the rare book collection

Scandalous and rare books from as far back as the 1500’s are displayed and read at an event at Wilson Library to celebrate Banned Books Week. This week, in honor of First Amendment Day, I decided to visit Wilson Library’s “Banned and in the Rare Book Collection” event on Tuesday evening. Though I am not very knowledgeable on the subject of banned books or the common reasons for their banning, I learned a lot from the event! While I had not heard of many of the books, I soon learned why they were banned. In the reading that followed, several UNC staff members and even a student read from banned books of their choosing. Readings like these were taking place all over the country in honor of Banned Books Week.

Students dig into the warm donut cake right out of the oven.

Recipe of the week: Doughnut cake

Ever heard of Doughnut cake? Probably not, because I made it up. The first recipe of the week for this year is a shout out to the Dozen Doughnut Dash this Saturday. Participants in the dash have to run two and a half miles, eat a dozen doughnuts, and then finish the one and a half miles left in the four mile race. Crazy, right? I’m not a runner, but I do enjoy my share of Krispy Kremes every now and then. Surprisingly, there aren’t many recipes that use doughnuts as an ingredient but I found this one from a Taste of the South recipe contest.

Answer a question, leave a question

If you could post any question on a sticky note and have a stranger leave a response, what would you ask? Well, now you can! The Hanes Art Center’s first floor lobby hosts an entire glass wall full of brilliant sticky notes with creative questions followed by intriguing, thoughtful, insightful and witty responses. All it takes is a wall, lots of sticky notes, and a sign saying, “Answer a Question. Leave a Question.”

Missing your childhood? Children's book collection could help

Have you been missing your childhood lately? Well, if Disney just can’t do the job, then never fear: UNC has a children’s book collection. Located in the SILS library, the children’s book collection contains over 14,000 juvenile and young adult books that can satisfy your need for nostalgia.

DIY: Changing your iPhone battery part one

For the past few weeks, my old iPhone 3GS has been unable to hold a charge for more than an hour. Words cannot describe how frustrating it is to have typed a long email to my editor only to have it disappear along with my iPhone’s power. On an iPhone, the battery is located behind the screen, and the back of the phone doesn’t come off like it does on other phones. The only way to remove the battery is to remove the screen, but accidentally removing the wrong component can render the whole phone useless.

Students vs. Zombies starts up yet again

A lone brown cardboard box stood in the middle of Hooker Field. A group of 20 students armed with Nerf guns cast a tentative glance around the empty field, then uniformly charged towards the box.

More than 100 gather to protest death-row inmate

A torrential downpour didn’t stop about 100 UNC students from gathering in the Pit at 5 p.m. on Wednesday to express their outrage at the controversial execution of Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis, and to speak out against racism and injustice.

UNC life: Too stressful? Students respond

At times, college life can seem a bit like a pressure cooker. The Daily Beast ranked UNC 43rd on its list of the 50 most stressful schools in the U.S. last year, and students generally agree that UNC is among the most stressful universities in the area.

Cycle Cinema a nice way to ease the workout pain

“What is pain? French bread! This was the mantra I kept repeating to myself throughout the hour and a half of my first cycle class ever. Sweat was dripping down my face, my thigh muscles were burning and I could not feel my butt, but Remember the Titans gave me the inspiration to survive the workout.

Student Congress votes not to override Cooper veto

On Tuesday night, Student Congress chose not to override Student Body President Mary Cooper’s veto of the College Republicans’ appropriations bill. The majority of College Republicans’ requested funds would have funded a speaking event by Republican pundit Ann Coulter.

The Boy Who Cried Wolf: Alert Carolina Edition

While the constant buzzing of my phone made me feel immensely popular (despite the fact that most of my friends received the catastrophe warning texts before me) on Sept. 6, I quickly became overwhelmed by UNC’s tornado warnings. With Alert Carolina, my iPhone quickly went from my most prized possession to a corrupted alarm clock constantly on snooze.

Classroom heat wave?

In the first month of school, many students have reported entering their lecture halls only to be suppressed by absurdly hot classroom temperatures. This apparent classroom heat wave has elicited a question from the UNC community: is this because of an attempt to save money or just a delusion in the mind of the student?

Kaitlin Groundwater, a second-year student from Va., is president of UNC’s Underwater Hockey Club.

Student of the Week: Kaitlin Groundwater

While Groundwater still swims in the pools at UNC, it’s for an entirely different reason. She currently plays forward for UNC Underwater Hockey. “It seemed like a change of pace from swimming laps, which in general is pretty boring,” Groundwater said. “It seemed enticing. I showed up for the first practice and it was definitely different, nothing like any other sport I played before.” Groundwater, who is planning to go to medical school after graduation, is now the team’s president. The club currently has 12 to 15 active members, and regularly recruits for their year-round season.

UNC Bucket List #88: Eat cheese fries at Linda’s on Franklin Street

When it comes to getting some good late-night greasy food, Linda’s Bar and Grill was never the first place that came to mind. Usually when I’m buzzed or hammered (and yes, ladies & gents, I’m over 21) I’ll usually head on over to Time-Out for a western omelet with cheese or grab Mexican food out at Qdoba or Cosmic Cantina. But Linda’s? Never been. I always thought it was a restaurant for some reason. In fact, I had always wondered if it was still in business since I never saw people walk in or out. None of my friends had ever talked about it, and since I felt all too comfortable in my usual Franklin St. haunts, I never really thought about visiting it. That was, however, until I heard about Linda’s cheese fries.

The Good Wife's Guide

Recently my friends and I have been filming skits for an event that was held this weekend. My favorite skit was based off of an article supposedly published in House Keeping Monthly in 1955. I played the lead role as the 50’s housewife and thought I would share with you some of the most surprising rules as a reminder of how far our society has come in the last 56 years.
