Album from the Vaults:
Paul Simon, Graceland: Simon's masterwork combines African rhythms with his deft lyricism to produce one of the greatest achievements in the history of American pop music. Seriously, it's that good.
Movie rental pick:
"Cool Hand Luke": Before Paul Newman was known for his salad dressings, he was known for his incredible acting talent and piercing blue eyes. This film is a true study in cool.
Something Random:
Say "Hi" to a stranger: If they don't respond, it's not you, it's them. Trust us.

Conor Oberst
Conor Oberst
4 Stars
It took a song that would fit perfectly in the middle of Blonde on Blonde for Conor Oberst to finally escape the "new Dylan" tag that has been firmly stuck on his back since he was about 15.
That song, "Get-Well-Cards," represents a man who is growing into that very status. He has become a great artist on his own, a move symbolized by him dropping the Bright Eyes moniker and deciding to stick his own name on this release, as if to say, "Here I am, take it or leave it."

Hey guess what, Ben Stiller's funny again!
It was a little hit-or-miss there, what with horribly awkward, completely irredeemable crap like "Along Came Polly" and "The Heartbreak Kid" making people actually wish for a "Zoolander 2."
But this time, Stiller's the one doing the writing and directing (as with "Zoolander"), and he's made a hilarious movie-within-a-movie about three inept actors stuck in the jungle while on location for their bloated, overly expensive Oscar-bait war movie.

Women's Golf
Coach Sally Austin sees only one simple means of improvement for the women's golf team.
"Competition," Austin said.
And coming off a season when the golfers finished 19th at NCAA West Regional and fifth in the ACC Championship, Austin is confident there is ample room for improvement.
"We were certainly disappointed with our finish in the ACC last year," she said. "We are looking to improve, and we will."
A newcomer and a veteran leader proved they have the goods to do just that with their play on the green during the summer.

It's hard to understand the big picture when so much is still left undefined. The canvas of the year ahead is only partially complete. There are still many questions that need to be answered.
What direction will new Chancellor Holden Thorp lead the University? Since the murder of last year's student body president, are we safe in our community? How will the economy affect the quality of our education? Who will be sitting in the Oval Office for the next four years?
These are questions many of us have. Turn to pages listed below for stories that contribute partial answers to the ever-evolving sketch. Getting the complete picture is an ongoing process that will continue this year as our decisions are ultimately etched into our future.

The men's basketball team hadn't appeared for the media in three months, so, when some of the players spoke July 14, they had plenty to talk about.
Marcus Ginyard, Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington, Danny Green, Deon Thompson and Bobby Frasor all spoke, and here are some of the comments the Daily Tar Heel overheard:
Ginyard on Ty Lawson, Ellington and Green's return to UNC:
"There was a huge celebration, actually, we had an ice cream cake; it was great (laughs). No, but, they just came back, and we just started working out again. It was nothing special, you know."

Starbucks has become a staple for many residents of Chapel Hill.
So Starbucks Corp.'s announcement last week that it will close 600 stores throughout the nation is troubling for those who get their daily java fix from the Franklin Street shop.
No list of closures has been released, but there are 200 Starbucks in the state, and 57 in the Triangle, that might be at risk.
Starbucks has seen rapid expansion during the past decade, but the franchise seems finally to have hit a wall.
The corporation's stock has been declining for the past two years.

Chapel Hill's options for a burger just got a whole lot healthier.
EVOS, a new restaurant opening in Eastgate Shopping Center on July 11, brings a low-fat, low-calorie approach to fast food, similar to that of Franklin Street's newest eatery, Buns, which opened last month.
Featuring burgers, fries and shakes with 50 to 70 percent less fat and calories than typical fast food, EVOS uses specialty ovens and organic ingredients.
Owned by SKS Healthy Foods, the restaurant plans to open a minimum of 21 EVOS locations in North Carolina and metro Atlanta in the next five years.
The restaurant is located at 1800 E. Franklin St., Suite 26.

As the North Carolina football team prepares for the second year of the Butch Davis era, DTH staff writer Christian Wisseh sat down with sophomore defensive tackle Marvin Austin.
DTH: How do you like UNC so far?
Marvin Austin: I enjoy UNC, man, when I came on my visit, I enjoyed the people. I enjoyed everybody down here. Since I've been down here, everything's been all good, I haven't had any problems school-wise, football-wise; I think we're getting better.
DTH: When you were being recruited, what did Butch Davis say to you to get you to come to UNC?
MA: Well, actually most of the time I was getting recruited I was getting recruited by John Blake, the defensive line coach. Coach Blake came up (to Washington, D.C.) and you know he came to my grandmother's house, and everyone was like, 'I don't know, I think he's a good guy.' And my grandmother really liked him, so I figured why not?
DTH: You always wear sunglasses around campus. What's the deal with the sunglasses?
MA: As I was growing up, my father always wore sunglasses, so any time you see my father, you would see him with a pair of shades on. Basically it's like if you see your parents do something growing up, it just becomes a custom to you. And now, it's just like I have it, I can't really go anywhere without my shades on.
DTH: Do you think that the close games from last season will help you reach another level this season?
MA: The team has gotten a lot older, guys have played, guys have experience. You can't pay for experience, I don't care how good you were in high school. You can replace someone who's played for three or four years.
DTH: Talk about your relationship with Kentwan Balmer and Hilee Taylor?
MA: Kentwan, Hilee and all the guys on our D-line, they just welcomed me with open arms. Kentwan was one of the only people I've ever looked up to in football, because I was always the biggest, the strongest the fastest. But Kentwan, he showed me how to play the position - he was always trying to teach me. He was kind of like a big brother to me. Hilee, the way he practiced and the way he played, that just shows you the type of person he is. Hilee is one of the coolest people you'll ever be around. I appreciate those relationships.
DTH: Let's step away from football. Who is Marvin Austin the person?
MA: I'll try to be as humble as possible, you know what I mean? I mean you're either gonna love me or hate me, it ain't gonna be no in-between. You're either gonna be like, 'oh, he's cool,' or 'I don't like him.' Because I'm gonna be me, and I ain't tryin' to impress nobody. I'm just tryin' to do what I do. I'm just tryin' to be the best Marvin that I can be. Outside of football, I like to chill with my family, my little sister. Basically, I'm just like everybody else.
