To combat food insecurity, Orange County's food council aims to change policy

The 15-member council has seats for each elected body, including representatives from the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, Hillsborough Board of Commissioners, Carrboro Town Council and Chapel Hill Town Council. A fifth designated seat goes to a representative from the Orange County Agricultural Preservation Board, whose role is to represent agriculture and farming.

'What an incredible injustice': UNC criticized for handling of racist past

The subject of Tuesday's “Conversations on Equity” lecture on equity and race relations quickly turned to the complicated history of race relations at UNC. Many in attendance expressed their disappointment in the University and its failure to confront its troubled past. William Sturkey, an assistant history professor at UNC, was the featured speaker at the meeting. He specializes in the history of race in the American South and teaches courses about southern history and the Civil Rights Movement.

February is now Black History Month for Orange County Schools

Orange County Schools have decided to create different programs throughout February to show the history of important African American leaders in history. Dena Keeling, the district's chief equity officer, said a goal of this initiative is to create a curriculum with classes that deal with different cultures and place an emphasis on these heritage months all the time.
