NFL owners unfair in dispute

As of this morning, we are 10 days into the NFL’s announced lockout of the players. The lockout stems from owners and the players’ union unable to strike a deal regarding the appropriation of $9 billion of annual league revenue.

Honor is shameful

Among UNC’s many sacred cows, perhaps the most sacrosanct is the student “honor code.” The alleged failings of the Honor Court have generated discussion of late, but the shibboleth of honor has unfortunately attracted little attention.

We must engender change: Students must ?ght to bring about gender-neutral housing at UNC

A recent resolution approved at Duke University moves the school one step closer to having gender-neutral housing available on campus. Students at UNC should realize that if they want to see similar success, they must be the ones leading the charge. Rick Bradley, assistant director of communication and assignments for UNC Housing and Residential Education, said UNC has looked into the issue but has not pursued it due to a lack of interest from students.

Kvetching board for March 18, 2011

kvetch: v.1 (Yiddish) to complain To the couple I saw holding hands while going for a run: Really? To the guy who handed me a CHiPS show flyer and then offered me a baby: Are you for real? It’s Friday, Friday, getting down on Friday… So that means yesterday was Thursday, and tomorrow is Shut Up Rebecca Black Day. Dear COMM 130 teacher: Could you really not find any examples to show us other than the German propaganda film “Triumph of the Will” starring Adolf Hitler? To the cute guy who had to pick up the condom that flew out of my backpack in Starbucks, take the hint! To Marvin, Robert and Greg: I’m no longer mad you guys took the gifts and money.

Feminists lack response to DTH’s BDSM column

After reading Thursday’s DTH, I have to admit that I was surprised at the lack of student reaction to Wednesday’s column by Perry Tsai (“I may be kinky, but I’m not crazy”). While college is an easy environment for the normalization of many behaviors, I feel I must draw the line at Tsai’s attempt to condone S&M.

We’re bringing home the bacon

Spring break diets may come and go, but when it comes to satisfying that urge to splurge on calories, bacon is forever. Quirky, kitschy and downright goofy-looking, bacon is America’s gastronomic sweetheart, but what’s with all the hoopla that surrounds pig belly meat anyway?

Responsible concealed carry use promotes safety

TO THE EDITOR: I would first like to commend the DTH for putting the topic of gun control and concealed carry laws into the spotlight with the March 14 “Viewpoints” column. I take issue with Mr. Jacobson’s claim that banning highly regulated individuals from carrying legally purchased firearms in a concealed manner on campus puts everyone else at risk.

New shelter, for some

Hey, progressive Chapel Hillians, how high does your social justice meter go? Do you draw the line at thinking about the rights and treatment of sex offenders — one of society’s most stigmatized groups?
