UNC Defense Shuts Down Golden Eagles

Matt Doherty didn't need to resort to throwing chairs. And no trash cans were harmed in the making of this North Carolina victory.Still, Doherty needed to find some way to motivate his squad. The Tar Heels were leading Marquette by 18 points at halftime on Saturday, and UNC's coach didn't want to see his team suffer through a letdown. So he made a bet with his team.Doherty didn't specify exactly what the favor would be, but his players would be rewarded nonetheless if they held Marquette to less than 30-percent shooting for the game.Mission accomplished.

Wrestlers Work to Earn National Prominence

Following North Carolina's upset victory of then-No. 7 Lehigh, UNC wrestler JohnMark Bentley spoke about what it takes to gain national prominence at the collegiate level."Every wrestler is talented in college," Bentley said. Gymnastics Wins First Meet of Year

The North Carolina gymnastics team defeated William & Mary 191.850-187.850 in the Tar Heels' first meet of the 2001 season Sunday.UNC senior Brooke Wilson placed first on all apparatuses, and the Tar Heels took the top four spots in the all-around. Wilson finished first in the all-around (39.375) by virtue of her top finishes on vault (9.8250), uneven bars (9.775), balance beam (9.925) and floor (9.850).Junior Monica Middleton placed second in the all-around with a score of 38.150.

The North Carolina women's basketball team knew that Virginia's 6-foot-3 forward Schuye LaRue would score her points Thursday night. Julius Peppers announced Thursday that he will not leave school after his sophomore season and enter this year's NFL Draft.
