In aftermath of elections, Student Code may be altered

A bill that will arise in the rules and judiciary committee of Student Congress today could make this year’s student election the last to be riddled by conflicting interpretations of election rules. The proposal would specifically require that select student government members resign from their high-level offices before campaigning for another position.

Alex Mills’ promotion came at a momentous time for Student Congress. And it was momentous in itself. By stepping in for Deanna Santoro as speaker, Mills became the first graduate student in recent memory to serve in the role.

Pauper showcases for charity

Pauper Players is returning to the Union Cabaret once more — but this time for charity. This will be Paupers’ first Winter Benefit Cabaret, an idea that came to them from a small-scale fundraiser a few Pauper members held last year at Jack Sprat Cafe.

	Cierra Hinton was selected by the Union Board of Directors.

Cierra Hinton named new president of CUAB

Although the Carolina Union Activities Board picked a new leader in January to replace graduating president Adele Ricciardi, the student board is already looking to the next academic year. Beginning this fall, junior Cierra Hinton will take the position of CUAB president.

Student Congress needs new speaker

With little more than a month remaining in its 92nd session, Student Congress is looking to fill the speaker position vacated Feb. 7 by Deanna Santoro. Though speaker nominations and the internal election will not come until Tuesday, representatives said the decision will likely come down to Alex Mills, speaker pro tempore, and Zach De La Rosa, chairman of the rules and judiciary committee.

Standing by campaign, Student Union rebuffs code

Amid an election season plagued by lawsuits, the status of the UCommons referendum is mired in uncertainty. Those involved in the suit, which accuses Student Union officials of campaigning for the referendum in a way that violates the Student Code, said they don’t know what comes next.

Dismissal could lead to SBP results

The road leading up to tonight’s pre-trial hearing that could result in the release of student body president election results has featured more than just the filing of legal briefs. Accusations have surfaced against the conduct of both former Speaker of Student Congress Deanna Santoro and Student Body Secretary Ian Lee.

SBP results may come out Tuesday

The results of the student body president election won’t be released until Tuesday at the earliest, said Jessica Womack, chief justice of the Student Supreme Court. The court will hold a pre-trial hearing Tuesday at 8 p.m. to hear arguments on the issue of whether or not to dismiss a complaint levied by Deanna Santoro, former speaker of Student Congress.

Campus recreation’s Valentine’s Day challenge draws couples

An ordinary basketball court transformed into the playground for an alternative Valentine’s Day celebration Sunday at the Rams Head Recreation Center. The 2011 Valentine’s Day Couples Challenge, organized by the special events committee of campus recreation, drew 15 couples who participated in a variety of challenges.
