UNC beats UNC-A in overtime with Lovejoy goal

From eight yards away and just left of frame, Rob Lovejoy unleashed a blast four minutes into overtime that ricocheted off the near post toward the far post. The ball nicked the inside of the post to net the goal that sealed the 2-1 win against UNC-Asheville at Fetzer Field Tuesday night.

UNC-A and Appalachian State host BYOB events for students

North Carolina law states that alcoholic beverages cannot be sold in student facilities on the UNC- system campus. But two public universities in Western North Carolina have found loopholes. On select nights at Appalachian State University hundreds of students gather at Legends, an on-campus venue, to listen to music and drink beer.

UNC School of Medicine to expand

The UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine will expand its medical school to the UNC-system campuses in Asheville and Charlotte. The expansion, announced Tuesday, will allow UNC-CH to train more physicians with a focus on training for practice in rural areas.

More gender non-specific bathrooms could come to UNC

For many students who identify as transgender or gender non-specific, the decision to choose between male or female restrooms on campus can be stressful. UNC-Asheville has tried to alleviate that tension by establishing gender non-specific bathrooms, and UNC could designate more of its bathrooms similarly.

Asheville is Mecca for liberal arts

The only liberal arts institution in the university system, UNC-Asheville has assumed a role very distinct from those of its 15 sister schools. “We give you a breadth in your education that prepares you to engage any challenge of the world that awaits you,” said Chancellor James Mullen, alluding to the comprehensive nature of the liberal arts curriculum.
