Welcome back to another edition of Tracking the Tar Heels. Let’s see what the Tar Heels have been up to: Sports Editor Brooke Pryor writes that North Carolina women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell will take a temporary leave from coaching after being diagnosed with leukemia.


Andrew Calder to temporarily direct women's basketball team

North Carolina women’s basketball associate head coach Andrew Calder said that coach Sylvia Hatchell — who announced recently that she will be taking a temporary leave from coaching due to a leukemia diagnosis — is in high spirits and is very excited for her team this year in a press conference Tuesday afternoon. “We will continue to uphold the high standards that coach Hatchell has set for this program,” Calder said. Calder will be directing the team during Hatchell’s absence, but said that Hatchell will remain very involved with the team.

No. 3 UNC leads California 2-0 at half

Goals by Nina Notman and Loren Shealy have keyed the No. 3 North Carolina field hockey team to a 2-0 halftime lead against California at Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels (8-2, 1-2 ACC) outshot the Golden Bears 24-1 in a lopsided opening half.
