Ricky Mcmahon started rapping for fun his sophomore year of high school, but he didn’t make it into the recording studio until last September. A Chapel Hill native and lifetime UNC fan, Mcmahon recently decided to mix his love of UNC basketball and rap.

Did you know that UNC’s music collection celebrated its 75th birthday not too long ago? “Curating Sound: 75 Years of Music Collections” at UNC is currently on display in the Melba Remig Saltarelli Room (that’s at the stop of the steps, in the middle of the third floor) in Wilson Library. This collection was put together to celebrate the music collection’s birthday last month.

When she was five years old, she began taking rhythmic gymnastic classes that heavily emphasized jazz and ballet. Later, she started participating in and eventually choreographing dance exhibitions held during festivals for Indian holidays like Diwali and Holi. Now as a freshman, Mahati has embraced the opportunity to dance with a local fusion dance group — the Chapel Hill Chalkaa. “Fusion dance allows me to both celebrate my heritage as well as bring it together with other cultures,” she said. “It lets me celebrate where I come from as well as who I am today.”
Today, the house that Hugh Hefner built released its rankings for the 2011-2012 college basketball season. That’s right, if you didn’t want to hear it from the AP or just wanted to hear it from someone with a little more…experience, Playboy teased its top 25 teams online. The teams will also headline the print magazine in December. Predictably, Playboy picked UNC to be the mack daddy of the upcoming season. But it also made some pretty bold predictions, for instance, picking Michigan State to finish the season ranked 13th or choosing Belmont, a team that nearly beat Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium, to round out the list.
Laura Rozo is a sophomore business and economics double major with a French minor. This summer while working for the local government in Azores, Portugal, she was diagnosed with stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of the muscles. She is currently undergoing an aggressive clinical trial which combines chemotherapy and radiation. Carolina Hispanic Association held a “One Night to Make a Wish” benefit ball dedicated to Laura on Friday night. They raised more than $1,000 in ticket sales and donations.
