There were no flowers or candy at Carmichael Auditorium on Wednesday night. But there was almost a Valentine's Day massacre.The North Carolina women's basketball team's date with Coastal Carolina ended with the heartbroken Chanticleers going home with a 72-54 loss and without a goodnight kiss.The game looked like CCU wouldn't have much of a chance at the start. The Chanticleers turned the ball over four times in their first five possessions of the contest in the face of UNC's swarming defense.

While many UNC students focused on romantic thoughts this Valentine's Day, several students took the opportunity to learn about the horrors of female genital mutilation in different societies."Violence Against Women as a Religious Ritual," a program held at the Wesley Foundation, was part of the V-Day Initiative, a worldwide effort to get the word out about violence against women.Kim Benton, the founder of V-Day on UNC's campus, presented video clips and led a discussion. She said the purpose of the program was to inform students of the horrors that women in other cultures must endure.

NCCU Revives Nursing Exam Scores

A year ago, N.C. Central University's nursing program seemed about as likely to post the highest passing rates in the UNC-system as Florida State now does to lead the Atlantic Coast Conference basketball standings.With a passing rate of only 66 percent in 1999, the Board of Governors threatened to shut down the program unless their scores improved.Just a year later, N.C. Grants Help Group Lend `A Helping Hand'

An area nonprofit organization has been awarded two grants totaling $37,400 from groups on both the local and national levels to help expand care of Chapel Hill's elderly and disabled.A Helping Hand has provided care to senior citizens and the disabled since May 1995, when the group was founded. The Orange-Chatham Group of the Sierra Club publicly raised environmental concerns about the University's growth to the Chapel Hill Town Council, hoping to influence the planning process for UNC's Master Plan.Sierra Club members said they would like their 13 environmental and community principles to be incorporated into the Master Plan, a blueprint for campus growth over the next 50 years.
