Yesterday the NCAA announced the teams playing in the Chapel Hill Regional and what times games will be played this weekend. East Carolina will start the regional Friday at 1 p.m. when they play St. John’s, the Tar Heels don’t play until 6 p.m. But Chapel Hill transit has set in place plans that will take effect much earlier in the day.

In the top of the seventh inning with the Tar Heels down 3-1, UNC coach Mike Fox pulled freshman Grayson Atwood off the bench to pinch hit for Adam Griffin with a runner on and one out in the inning. Atwood took the first pitch he saw and sent it over the fence in left center field to tie the game. “My approach was to put a good swing on the first good pitch I see,” Atwood said about his first home run since his high school days.

The ACC named four North Carolina baseball players to the All-Conference team today. Sophomore Kent Emanuel, UNC’s left-handed Friday night starter, and closer Michael Morin earned first team honors for their efforts this season. Emanuel is 8-3 on the season and posted the second best ERA in the conference with 1.80. Michael Morin leads the ACC with 17 saves this season. This season is marks the first time that two UNC pitchers made the first team in program history. Senior Jacob Stallings was named to the second team along with Brian Holberton. Stallings is one of the nation’s most intimidating catchers as he has held opponents to the fewest stolen base attempts in the country.

Former North Carolina men’s basketball assistant coach Jerod Haase has completed his coaching staff at the University of Alabama Birmingham. And he’s taking another former Tar Heel with him. After spending 13 years on Roy Williams staff at both Kansas and UNC, Haase accepted his first head coaching gig at UAB on March 27. Today, UAB announced that Bobby Frasor, a member of UNC’s 2009 national championship, will be the director of operations.
North Carolina senior and former basketball player Tyler Zeller reemerged on Twitter Tuesday afternoon. His new handle — @ZellerTyler. His first tweets coincided with his visit to ESPN, where he appeared on a SportsCenter that aired on ESPNNEW. Within an hour of making his first tweet, one that included a picture with Scott Van Pelt (@NotthefakeSVP), Zeller already had more than 4,000 followers.
