1 P.M. TUESDAY NOV. 4 — Chapel Hill police charged the driver of the bus that hit and killed a pedestrian on South Columbia Street with misdemeanor death by vehicle today.James Willie Orr65 also was fired by the town of Chapel Hill after an internal investigation according to a statement from Town Manager Roger Stancil released today.Orr is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 12 2009.Valerie Hughes33 was struck Oct. 28 while in the crosswalk of South Columbia Street and Mason Farm Road. Hughes had worked as a UNC Hospitals radiology imaging specialist since November 2007.

- An incident of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill occurred on West Franklin Street on Saturday night according to Chapel Hill police reports.Someone threatened the victim with a knife at 6 p.m. reports state.- A man was arrested early Monday and charged with selling cocaine according to Chapel Hill police reports.Reports state that Chad Vernon Clark31 of Siler City was stopped while driving on Roberson Street.Clark was taken to the Orange County Jail under a $5000 bond according to reports.- A fight at Bailey's Pub and Grill early Sunday resulted in five damaged bar glasses according to Chapel Hill police reports.- Someone stole a camera and a laptop computer from a Chapel Hill residence Sunday afternoon according to Chapel Hill police reports.The Dell computer and Nikon camera have a total value of $150 reports state.- Harris Teeter at University Mall failed an alcohol compliance check Thursday according to Carrboro police reports.The grocery store was the only one of 10 local businesses that didn't pass according to reports.Reports state that the Carrboro and Chapel Hill police departments used underage buyers that attempted to purchase alcohol at the locations.- A Carrboro resident reported a stolen scooter Friday according to Carrboro police reports.The resident left town for 10 days and when she returned the vehicle was gone reports state.The scooter was on the back porch and was not chained to anything reports state.- An officer responded Friday to reports of a barking dog according to Carrboro police reports.Reports state that the officer arrived at the intersection of Farmhouse Drive and Buckeye Lane but did not hear any barking.

5:30 p.m. MONDAY OCT. 27 — A female pedestrian was struck by a Chapel Hill Transit bus at about 4 p.m. today.The victim appeared to be in serious condition and was taken to N.C. Memorial Hospital said Sgt. Donnie Rhoads of Chapel Hill Police. She has not yet been identified.The incident occurred in the southbound lane of South Columbia Street about 20 feet south of the intersection of South Columbia Street and Mason Farm Road said Randy Young spokesman of the Department of Public Safety.

5:05 p.m. MONDAY OCT. 27 GREENSBORO — A federal grand jury has indicted one of the two suspects in the killing of former Student Body President Eve Carson. Demario James Atwater22 now carries federal charges of carjacking resulting in death using firearms during a carjacking being a felon in possession of firearms" and possessing an improperly registered shotgun. The first two counts are punishable by life imprisonment or the death penalty. The second two carry 10-year prison sentences. The U.S. Attorney General has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall has already indicated that he will seek the death penalty for similar charges in state court.Read the indictment.The Daily Tar Heel will continue to update this story throughout the day.

2:30 p.m. MONDAY — Sheriffs have identified the two men found shot to death Saturday. David Junior Hayden 49 of Hillsborough and Willie Robertson Elliott III 31 of Durham were found at a residence at a Highway 70 East residence.Hayden's only known residence is the house at which he was found dead. His family in South Carolina has been notified.The renter of the house Demario Montta Thompson left the house at about midnight Friday. Saturday morning he missed a call from his girlfriend. His girlfriend then went to the residence Saturday morning and found the front door kicked in and the bodies in the living room.Sherriffs say that motives for the homicide have not been established and they will continue to follow leads today.The Daily Tar Heel will continue to update this story throughout the day.

- Someone robbed and assaulted a Durham woman on East Franklin Street late Saturday according to Chapel Hill police reports.Police charged Bryan Keith Hilliard17 of Chapel Hill with felony counts of strong arm robbery and possession of stolen goods for the theft of $3302 reports state.Hilliard is being held at Orange County Jail in lieu of $20000 bail. He is expected in court today.- Police charged three Chapel Hill men Friday for carrying stolen firearms according to Chapel Hill police reports.Reports state that Marcus Lee Sharpe20 of 7803 Rogers Road; Jimmy Earl Sharpe40 of 604 Old School Road; and Johnny Earl Sharpe Jr.22 of 703 Gomains Ave. were arrested at 5:45 p.m. near Tate Realty in Chapel Hill.Police found a stolen firearm in Johnny Sharpe's laundry basket according to reports. Johnny Sharpe also faces misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and failure to carry a driver's license reports state.Jimmy Sharpe was found in possession of a stolen firearm in the car he was riding in reports state. He also faces a charge of weapon possession by a felon report state.Reports state that Marcus Sharpe had a large butcher's knife beneath his feet. He was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon.All three are expected in court today reports state.- A UNC student faces a misdemeanor charge of assault on a female according to Chapel Hill police reports.William Grayson Bates18 of 2614 Granville Towers South slapped someone in the face Saturday at Mansion 462 at 462 W. Franklin St. reports state.- Chapel Hill police received reports Saturday of someone dancing in the street according to Chapel Hill police reports.Reports state that someone was in the road at 1:43 a.m. at Franklin Street and U.S. 15-501 South.- After police received complaints of an animal running at large an officer chased a small brown dog according to Carrboro police reports.Reports state that the officer lost sight of the dog and someone let it inside an apartment.The officer will step up patrols in the area according to reports.

2:05 p.m. FRIDAY OCT. 11 HILLSBOROUGH — Orange County authorities have identified the body of a man killed by a gunshot to the head and found on Morrow Mill Road on Sunday.Jose Antonio Estrada Carrillo was identified by fingerprints and an acquaintance. He was last seen four months ago and may have been living in Guilford County.His last known address is 500 Jefferson St. in Kernersville.Police asked that anyone with information about his location in the last four months contact the Orange County Sherriff's Office.Carillo29 was found after a resident called 911 on Sunday afternoon to report a body in an embankment near Morrow Mill Road's 8300 block.Officers think the body had been in the same location for a few days.

UNC-system President Erskine Bowles said Thursday that N.C. Central University will have to repay federal loans granted to students who were enrolled in an unauthorized satellite campus.We will have a significant liability"" he said, adding that details were still up in the air and the UNC system still needed to talk with the U.S. Department of Education.The campus, founded in 2004 and based in an Atlanta-area church, was unknown to the UNC system until August. It was never approved by NCCU, UNC-system General Administration, the Board of Governors or the agency responsible for accrediting schools in the region. The campus was dissolved in June.Why" I still do not know" Bowles said of not being informed about the campus. I can think of no justifiable reason whatsoever why the former leadership at NCCU would completely fail to abide by the appropriate approval process.""Bowles said that they had examined more than 400 schools and found nothing comparable to the situation with NCCU. He also said they would have to do right by the 125 students involved with the program" including the 25 who graduated and 39 who were still enrolled when the campus was dissolved.Bowles thanked NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms for his handling of the situation" which was the doing of the prior administration.""I want to say" up front thank God for Charlie Nelms" he said. WEDNESDAY" SEPT. 10 1:21 p.m. - North Carolina sophomore swimmer Allison Barnes was taken to UNC Hospitals after becoming ill at a practice Thursday afternoon the Department of Athletics said today. Steve Kirschner associate director of athletics for communications" told The (Raleigh) News & Observer that Barnes was pulled out of the pool by her coaches who called 911. The N&O; reported that Barnes was in critical condition Tuesday night. When reached for comment" Kirschner and hospital officials would not give details about the swimmer's condition.

School of Medicine official to head airport authorityA UNC School of Medicine administrator will lead efforts to establish a new Orange County airport authority.The 15-member airport authority will be led jointly by UNC-Chapel Hill and the UNC Health Care System with representation from Orange County and its municipalities.Kevin FitzGerald executive associate dean for finance and administration in the medical school was named by Chancellor Holden Thorp and UNC School of Medicine Dean Bill Roper to oversee the organization and initial work of the authority. A law recently enacted by the General Assembly allowed UNC's Board of Governors to create an airport authority which will be charged with locating and directing construction of the replacement for Chapel Hill's Horace Williams Airport.Board to discuss proposed school site developmentOrange County's Board of County Commissioners will discuss a new school site solid waste processing procedures and zoning for a planned mall at a 7:30 p.m. meeting today.On the agenda for the meeting in Hillsborough: Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools' request that the former location of Northside Human Services Center be used as the site for the system's 11th elementary school. Public hearing for zoning and special-use permit applications for the Buckhorn Village planned development. The commissioners' review of the zoning application will begin Sept. 16 An advisory board's assessment of the feasibility of implementing alternative solid-waste processing procedures. A consultant's report indicates that alternative technologies would not be justified in Orange County.

University to create center for natural disaster studyUNC will receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to engage in research about natural disasters.The University will pair with other schools government agencies and industries to study natural disasters in coastal areas.The money will be used to create a Center of Excellence for the Study of Natural Disasters Coastal Infrastructure and Emergency Management.The grant will provide UNC researchers with at least $2.5 million a year for the next six years. This amount could increase as research develops.Undersecretary Jay Cohen of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security U.S. Rep. David Price and Chancellor Holden Thorp will announce the grant at a press conference at 2 p.m. today at the Carolina Inn. Ramadan a month-long Muslim fast begins todayToday is the first day of the month of Ramadan during which Muslims fast from sunrise until sunset. The daily fasting lasts until Sept. 30.The Muslim Students Association will hold its first Iftar - a communal evening meal for breaking the daily fast - at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in Student Union 3415 and a second at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Student Union 3206.Muslims commemorate the month because it was during this time that the first verses of the Quran were revealed.The fast not only includes refraining from food but also sins like lying cheating and swearing.MSA also offers a space for daily prayer in room 3205 from noon to 5 p.m.See Thursday's DTH for more coverage of Ramadan and MSA's commemoration.

Highway 54 and the right front of the car is damaged police say.The victim was transported to N.C. Memorial Hospital. Women's soccerCOLLEGE STATION TEXAS-No. 2 North Carolina saw a two-goal lead disappear in the second half but a score by freshman forward Courtney Jones in the 83rd minute proved to be the game-winner for the Tar Heels as they defeated No. 13 Texas A&M; 3-2 Friday night before a crowd of 5642 at the Aggie Soccer Complex. It was the first of four games this weekend in A&M;'s Weekend Invitational.The Tar Heels improved to 2-0 on the season while the host Aggies fell to 2-1.Against No. 14 Tennessee UNC got a goal from junior forward Nikki Washington 27 minutes into the match and made it hold up as the No. 2 Tar Heels shut out No. 14 Tennessee 1-0.The Tar Heels improved to 3-0 on the season with the win after beating back-to-back ranked opponents in College Station.VolleyballCHAMPAIGN Ill. - North Carolina opened it's season 0-3 after finishing the State Farm Illini Classic in Champaign Ill. UNC lost to No. 11 Oregon and to No. 24 New MexicoState in a two Saturday matches.Christine Vaughen and Suzanne Haydel finished with a team-high seven kills apiece against Oregon.Vaughen earned all-tournament honors for her efforts through the weekend.Next weekend UNC hosts the Carolina Volleyball Classic.

Bowles voices objections to lower drinking age effortsUNC-system President Erskine Bowles announced Friday his opposition to efforts to lower the drinking age. UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp is supporting the decision.The announcement comes a week after Duke University President Richard Brodhead and more than 100 other university presidents asked for reconsideration of the drinking age.The presidents are part of an effort called the Amethyst Initiative which believes lowering the drinking age will decrease the prevalence of binge drinking on college campuses.

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS uses artistic expression to generate support and awareness for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.The benefit begins at 10 p.m. and runs until 2 a.m. Admission is $3 for those 21 and older and $5 for those under 21. All candidates have until Friday to file.Hillsborough tree is largest of its species in the areaA tree at the Burwell School Historic Site was recently recognized as a ""Champion Big Tree.""The N.C. Forest Service awarded this title to the 92-foot Osage orange in Hillsborough because it is the largest of its species in the area.Another Osage orange was honored with this title in 1977. That tree had a circumference of 235 inches" a height of 67 feet and a crown spread of 77 feet.The Hillsborough Tree Board will honor the tree at the Hillsborough Town Board's March 10 meeting to the Burwell School.Three agencies will move to new Hillsborough locationThree Orange County Government offices are moving to a new location beginning March 19.The Registrar of Deeds Revenue and Tax Assessor and Land Records offices are moving to the Gateway Center in Hillsborough.These offices will close at 5 p.m.March 14 at the Link Government Services Center and will reopen for business at 8 a.m. March 19 at The Gateway Center. The offices will be closed on March 17 and 18.The new address is 228 S. Churton St. Suites 200 and 300.
