Bright Eyes
Four Winds
country/rock
On Four Winds, Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst produces animated, twisted country-rock songs full of gorgeous cynicism that will leave the listener haunted, goosebumped and actively questioning his place in life. The six songs on the EP make the full-length Cassadaga seem irrelevant with a superior grace and quality.
- Melissa Brown
Un Deux Trois
Lovers
indie pop
Un Deux Trois' Heather McEntire sings with a confident fragility that steers her songs squarely into affecting memorability. When she describes some of life's more fleeting joys on "45 RPM," the final track of Lovers, the pain of knowing it'll all be done soon is bearable only because the pleasure in her songwriting is so real and so heart-pumpingly immediate.
- Bryan Reed
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
Follow The Lights
Country/rock
Ryan Adams' deeply emotional music can elicit any response from anger to tears. He's never been known for his ability to self-edit, but here Adams reworks some older songs, most notably changing "Is This It" from an arena-rock jam to a subtle ballad that lets its beautiful lyrics shine through.
- Jamie Williams
Dan Bryk
Discount Store
Pop/rock
It's almost impossible not to smile when listening to Dan Bryk's Discount Store EP. Whether he's satirizing commercialism on the effervescent "Discount Store" or making peace with his individuality on the resigned shuffle of "Normal," Bryk's bright pop-rock tunes deliver youth, insight and humor.

Spank Rock & Benny Blanco
Bangers & Cash
Hip-Hop/dance
On the five-track Bangers & Cash, producer Benny Blanco provides kick drums and super-fast dance tempos that remind listeners of a time when booty music ruled the skate rink. Meanwhile MC Spank Rock elaborates on the specifics of "doin' it."

The Graves of Fairmount
Calendars & Casualties
Indie
On his varied but cohesive debut, Paul O'Keefe, aka The Graves of Fairmount, drives through life looking for the right exit. O'Keefe's introspective journey might be a difficult one, with no rest, but Calendars and Casualties assures us that he'll get there.

Tokyo Police Club
Smith
rock
Toronto's Tokyo Police Club showcases a knack for bouncy keyboard/guitar lines paired with happy-go-lucky melodies. On Smith's four short songs, the band puts together compact tunes full of loud, fast tempos and Strokes-y shout-along vocals that make for a quick, fun listen.
- Luis Torres
Red Collar
Hands Up
indie Rock
Red Collar embodies all that rock 'n' roll was supposed to be, and more than that, where it can return with just a big shot in the arm. The working man never sounded so passionate as on Hands Up, four tracks that will come at you fast and leave you with a gap-toothed smile.
- Jamie Williams
Flight of the Conchords
The Distant Future
comedy/folk
New Zealand's folk-inspired answer to Spinal Tap, Flight of the Conchords is a duo of comedians pretending to be rock stars. The Distant Future gathers the band's best cuts, including "Business Time," which should be looked up on YouTube as soon as possible.
- Luis Torres
Hammer No More The Fingers
Hammer No More The FIngers
indie rock
Whether you're listening to the sarcastic revery of "O.R.G.Y." or the poignant goodbye of "Bossman" HNMTF hits hard with a sound that kicks you in the gut and makes sure you know what hit you.

Megafaun
Bury The Square
folk/noise
Combining Appalachian folk with clattering noise and group-sung exuberance, Megafaun builds its own traditions atop the ashes of old ones. Bury The Square ends itself with "Lazy Suicide," a slow-building stomp that gleefully brings feedback and unorthodox percussion to a rural hoedown.

Lust, Caution
4 stars
Ang Lee has a knack for creating an environment.
His keen attention to detail through lighting, set and costume design always serves to help illuminate his characters' motives.
Whether illustrating the crushing loneliness of a desolate Wyoming countryside in "Brokeback Mountain" or the tense urgency of WWII-era Shanghai in his latest film, "Lust, Caution," Lee succeeds in showing the how and the why.
"Lust, Caution" is, above all, a pitch-perfect spy movie, capturing the tension of trying to balance the double life of espionage.

Dan Bryk: Presenting: "Not Making Music for a Living!"
Diversions: So are you at that point (of making money with your music) yet, or do you still have your day job?
DB: I'm long since resenting . I've kind of backslid a little bit on that.
