Kvetching board for November 25

kvetch: v.1 (Yiddish) to complain - To all the girls who study in the first floor bathroom of Howell Hall: Having an audience will not dissuade me from making No. 2 my No. 1 priority.  Consider yourselves warned.

'Project Heal' slogan was offensive inappropriate

TO THE EDITOR:    On Nov. 13 at Player's Nightclub" ""Project Heal"" a campus organization, whose mission is to engage undergraduate students in international service experiences to facilitate culturally relevant and locally driven sustainable development in Lawra and Kumasi" Ghana" hosted a Wild, Wild West-themed party to raise money for their organization. As their efforts abroad are certainly commendable, I would encourage them to first understand cultural issues right here in America.

Getting rid of Christmas tree in library goes too far

TO THE EDITOR:This has gone way too far. The decorations and month-long break have already been named ""holiday"" instead of ""Christmas."" This is a ""spirited"" tree in the library"" it does not represent the Christian Christmas which is considered to be offensive.

UNC should have place for N.C. State to get revenge

TO THE EDITOR:In response to the article ""Red spray paint mars UNC"" Nov. 21, I believe that it is very hypocritical of our campus to repeatedly paint the N.C. State Free Expression Tunnel without offering a legal alternative for State fans to return the favor.""

Reports of Mardi Gras Indians arrested untrue

TO THE EDITOR:In response to a Friday night online article regarding the marchers arrested on Franklin Street I wanted to be sure both the University and town community were aware that the report of the arrested marchers being members of the Mardi Gras Indians who visited campus on Friday was not true.

State responds to baby blue in free speech tunnel

TO THE EDITOR:The N.C. State University student body would like to thank you for the gorgeous mural painted Tuesday evening in our Free Expression Tunnel. The nauseating shade of baby blue went perfectly with the turning leaves outside Turlington and Alexander residence halls this morning.

Fellow Carolina fans were rude should stay home

TO THE EDITOR:As an avid Carolina Fever member it has been ingrained in my head that all fans should stand at UNC sporting events to show support. This is the offense my girlfriend and I committed against the belligerent fans sitting behind us at Tuesday's basketball game in section 209. The abuse began early in the first half and escalated in the second half to the point where each and every time we stood up following a time out countless explicative's moans and boos were thrown our way.

Silent Sam helps inspire us to move past racism

TO THE EDITOR: I for one see Sam as a reminder of our University's dark history and as a symbol I desperately wish to prove wrong. In a weird way he ends up being an inspiration. On the night of Sen. Obama's victory I wanted to run up to Sam and tell him how I really felt.

STV manager was selfish embarrassed organization

TO THE EDITOR: As the outgoing Station Manager of UNC Student Television" I penned a guest column (""Student Television: the Great Failure"" April 18, 2007). I detailed my frustrations and personal failures in four years at STV in various roles.

Ashley Judd shouldn't have gotten a good seat

TO THE EDITOR: Can someone please explain to me why we are giving Ashley Judd one of the few decent student seats that exist in the Smith Center? First off she is NOT a student. Second she is an ardent Kentucky fan.

Silent Sam is more about sacrifice than racism

TO THE EDITOR: Last week I was showing our beautiful university to a friend. I was dismayed to see food splattered on the front of Silent Sam's pedestal. I realize that many in North Carolina would like nothing better than to see Silent Sam torn down. I also realize that some would argue that the men he enshrines deserve to be forgotten.

Students shouldn't care so much about trivialities

TO THE EDITOR: Chill out" people. I'm sick of reading letters to the editor and editorials where people are getting angry about the stupidest things and demanding ""justice.""

11/16/2008 12:00am

Singing of alma mater should be classy not rude

TO THE EDITOR:Those fans dedicated enough to remain past the final buzzer of basketball games will sing the alma mater and fight song — well" our version at least. The original fight song ends with ""Rah! Rah! Rah!"" We have replaced it with ""Go to hell"" Duke.""

11/16/2008 12:00am

DTH should cover football as much as basketball

TO THE EDITOR:Why is it the day after Miami beats Virginia Tech and the day before Carolina faced Maryland all we Carolina football fans read in the DTH is an article about the football game and basketball game being at the same time? There were more articles in the DTH last year about football and we were losing games. Why does basketball get an article for a meaningless game?

Eve Carson Memorial 5k was an amazing success

TO THE EDITOR:Thank you Carolina! Thanks to the 2191 people who registered to run or walk in the inaugural Eve Marie Carson Memorial 5k making it an amazing success. We would also like to say a huge thank you to the members of Phi Delta Theta and Pi Beta Phi who hosted this event and worked tirelessly to ensure its success.

11/16/2008 12:00am

Condom advertisement was offensive and crude

TO THE EDITOR:The content of last week's one-page Durex advertisement was unsettling: ""Major in sex and you could score $25"0" and a $2 lift for your ‘studies.'"" Students and faculty fought to get and keep a minor in Sexuality Studies. Making fun of ""majoring"" in sex derides healthy sexuality and the study of it.

Racism at UNC is alive and was part of Homecoming

I was appalled by The Daily Tar Heel's claim of the ""historic"" election (""Historic Homecoming Election"" Nov. 10). This was a direct mockery of the truly historical presidential election. (Yes, more people voted in this election than ever before, but still the amount of participants falls far below 20 percent of all students.) This isn't historic."" The DTH also offered Jeremy Crouthamel exclusive coverage during the election week.

11/14/2008 12:00am

Homecoming elections about unity not racism

UNC prides itself on diversity and acceptance. When Jeremy Crouthamel was named Homecoming king at the football game I saw Donovan Livingston hug Crouthamel and say" ""Congratulations"" brother.""

Dialogue should continue on town developments

It's important to recognize that Greenbridge is in fact only one piece of the broader trend of gentrification in Chapel Hill. Developments like Rosemary Village Warehouse Apartments the Franklin Hotel and the upcoming development at 140 W. Franklin St. all contribute to rising property taxes.
