Police log for October 12, 2011

Someone broke into a house and stole two laptops between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday at 436 Piney Mountain Road, according to Chapel Hill police reports. One laptop was valued at $830 and the other at $420, reports state.

Someone took a suitcase from a sidewalk at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday at 206 W. Franklin St., according to Chapel Hill police reports. The stolen suitcase was valued at $75.

The latest campus crime statistics released by the University show the number of reported sexual assault cases on campus nearly tripled in 2010. But officials say the spike doesn’t necessarily translate to an increase in crime.

Police log for October 5, 2011

Someone broke into a home through the back door and stole a computer Monday between 3:40 p.m. and 4:19 p.m. at 1501 Manly St., according to Chapel Hill police reports. Damage to the property was valued at $300, and the computer was valued at $1,400, reports state.

Someone set two fires between 3:28 a.m. and 6:18 a.m. Thursday at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house, according to police reports. A toilet paper roll and a notebook were burned, reports state. Someone stole cash from an office between 6 a.m.

Carson murder suspect trial date set for Nov. 28

Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr. is set to go to trial Nov. 28 on first-degree murder charges for the 2008 shooting of former student body president Eve Carson, Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said Wednesday. Prosecutors say Lovette and Demario James Atwater kidnapped Carson from her home on March 5, 2008.
